GinaCampbell 434 Posted December 1, 2016 Six months post op following gastric sleeve and thought things were looking up. Finally got in for my 3 month checkup 3 months late due to complications) and asked if my PPI could be increased because of all the burning pain in my stomach and throat. The nutritionist said he would ask. Received a call from the MDT to say that a surgeon on the team thinks that I may have an ulcer and wants to personally do a gastroscopy urgently. The soonest he can do it is the 16th of December. Problem is that the burning has gotten quite a bit worse in the past few days. Using the prescribed lansoprazole and Gaviscon, not eating trigger foods etc. but I recently started taking the bariatric supplement Forceval (prescribed) everyday. This is new because I had previously been too ill to take them. I am going to lay off them to see if that will help. I hate to stop my supplements because I am nearly bald as it is but this burning, gnawing business is no joke! I will go back to Clear liquids (fourth time lucky lol), then full. Any other ideas to get me through until the 16th? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

GinaCampbell 434 Posted December 2, 2016 Had you not seen Dr in those 3 mos with complications? Sent from my SM-G900H using the BariatricPal App Oh my goodness! I have been admitted in and out of hospital, in and out of my GP, nurse, clinic appts etc. I have been battling a C Diff infection and dozens of other post op complications. But did I receive treatment from my bariatric team, absolutely not. They considered all post op issues to be other people's problems. I am not even sure why the bariatric MDT decided to act this time. I only got a phone call from their secretary. Then a call from the endoscopy team. No letter, information or advice from the team. I am suffering though right now and quite worried because I can't control the burning. My C Diff symptoms have flared again too. I don't even know if they could be related? Is it the acid causing the bowel symptoms? Is it the C Diff causing the acid? I have no clue and no one to advise me because it crosses the different care pathways (GP says ask surgeon, surgeon says ask GP). Guest Posted December 3, 2016 So sorry to hear this. I think I did read some of your mishap in a different post. I think that's when I get worried. I try and stay in the moment, but you know how that goes. I wish you two the best and hope there is some resolve.

theantichick 2,204 Posted December 6, 2016 If they suspect an ulcer, they should be giving you something like Carafate. Do you have an option to call and ask for something that will give more coating and relief than the Gaviscon and lansoprazole?
GinaCampbell 434 Posted December 6, 2016 No. They feel that me having the endoscopy on the 16th is sufficient. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I know that medicine is practiced very differently in the UK but this is shocking to me as an RN. I wish I could send you the carafate I didn't use post-op that was prescribed *just in case* I was having more stomach discomfort than the PPI would handle. GinaCampbell 434 Posted December 6, 2016 I agree with you. I am trying everything to calm it down. It burns if I do eat, it burns if I don't eat. The lansoprazole doesn't feel helpful but initially, the Gaviscon gives me some relief. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I used to use Gaviscon a lot for reflux, it did a better job than chewable antacids because it coats more. I'm lucky that the sleeve didn't aggravate my reflux, it was one concern I had about having the sleeve. I've read that bananas help, are you able to tolerate those? GinaCampbell 434 Posted December 6, 2016 I try to eat at least one banana a day, usually at Breakfast time. I am struggling to eat because of the burning. I am always hungry but now think this might be an acid issue. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
