Help! Old habits die hard, how do I turn this around?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY 5/25/16. I have gone from 268 to 210. I feel old habits creeping in and am stuck in a foodaholic state. Has anyone else gone through this??? What has helped?? All I know is I didn't come this far to turn back.

You have to go back to basics. I'm guessing that some of the foods you've gotten complacent on are carbs. You're going to have to do a carb detox. Cut them all out. Go back to 2-3 ounces of DENSE Protein for a meal... chicken, beef, pork, tuna... maybe with a tablespoon or two or non-starchy veggies/ cottage cheese/ salad. No potatoes, Pasta, rice, sugars.

You'll have to white knuckle it for about 5-7 days. It's not easy... but use those times that you are craving crap to get your Water in.

Get your Water intake to well over 64ounces... I shoot for 100.

Measure your food. All of it. Record your food in something like My Fitness Pal, daily.

Talk to yourself. Really, honestly have a long talk with yourself and ask yourself why you're not following your plan to get thin, and why you keep going awry.

I haven't fallen off the wagon for more than a few tastes during a meal (with the exception of a can of whipped cream that I may have lost my mind over for a few days  ). I like the way I'm feeling much too much to mess it up. We only have so many months of the honeymoon period. You still have time (we are close in surgery dates!)

Good luck! Get serious with yourself, and just go to basics, you can do it!

I have fallen completely off the wagon. So, time to get back on. The first thing I am going to do is make an appointment with a therapist that deals with food issues. Next, as @pammieanne has said, time to get back to basics. I'm going to do the 5-day pouch test. I did it once and it was easier than I had expected. And probably more importantly, logging my food. Keeping a food journal is magical--it just works. But it is SO hard to keep up!! But I need to get back to that. I also want to go back to plain Water as well as crystal light. I do have to say that ever since I started drinking crystal light is when I started to get off the wagon. There may be no cause/effect here, just an observation. So need to start drinking some plain Water as well.

Those are things that I am going to try. I wish you the best of luck.

There may be a correlation with the gain and the Crystal Light. I had regained 8 pounds and was hungry a lot. Then I realized that it all started when I was drinking my water with Crystal Light or Mio. I think the artificial sweeteners screw with the receptors in your brain.

Thank you all. This is so right on. I let the crabs back in and began relying solely on crystal light/mio because plain Water was hurting my stomach. I can handle it now so it's time to let go of the fake sugars. I called a nutritionist is my area because my surgeon is 3 hours away and I think going back to counseling will be a big help. Definitely need a carb detox. It's a hurdle that I'm going to have to force myself to jump. Thank you all for the support. I didn't do this for nothing and I'm not giving up now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
