How long before you can Drive??

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery on Monday and I am planning on returning to work this Monday.

However, the recovery room nurse told me that I couldn't drive until the DR. cleared me (after my first post-op visit in 2-4 weeks! ).

This can't be right (no driving for up to 4 weeks)....or is it? I tried to call the dr office today but they are closed.

My surgery is Monday and i am wondering the same thing. The papers from the hospital say not until after the post-op visit, but that is over two weeks away. I have to be able to drive to school and work. What did other people do??

I expect the papers from the hospital are generalized instructions for all releases. My doctor told me I could drive as soon as I wasn't taking the pain medication. I would recommend calling your doctor, even if it means delaying your return to work by a day (or a 1/2 day). That is still better than waiting 2 weeks.

I had my surgery :clap2:Wednesday and came home yesterday(Thursday), remove bandages and take a shower today (woohoo). The Doctor told me could drive :car:in 48 hrs after coming home if I was not taking any of the strong pain medication. And I am to return to see him in one week to be released to return to work. No lifting over 25 lbs for 60 days, but I do office work so he said I could return after seeing him in a week. Hope this helps, but I am sure that each person is different and depending on if you had any problems during surgery and so forth

Have a GREAT DAY! and hope this help a little.

I drove after four days but probably could have for a short distance before then. I only took pain meds for first two days and that wasn't on a regular basis.

My doctor put me on NO restrictions after surgery. I was operated on on Wednesday. Friday morning I drove myself home from my Mom's....34 miles across town. It was a non-issue, though I was a little anxious initially with the "sitting" part. It wasn't a bother at all.

Our car insurance companies will not indsure us to grive for a week after an operation. Hope you do not have that restriction in the US

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
