Recommended Posts

Hi all new to site. Read a lot of info thanks to everyone sharing. Not sure if it's made me more anxious or calmer lol. Wondering if anyone wants to share their experience together i'm scheduled for next week dec 8th. Excited anxious nervous scared!! Just want it over with before I change my mind. Scared of the Hair loss oh I probably could go on. Looking forward to doing things I haven't been able to do in a long time due to my weight.

Out of curiosity, how was the preop and approval process in BC?

I live in NS, and there is only 1 bariatric surgeon in the province as far as I know, bypass is the only option, BMI 50+ and it takes about 7.5 years from start to finish.

I went to Mexico for mine, since at BMI 36 I would never be approved.

Hi there

I belong to a program I started in feb 2016 - medical weight management program. From there I was referred to the surgeon in October and surgery scheduled for December. You have to prove that you are making lifestyle changes, journaling your food, exercise, understanding portions, mindful eating just to name a few things. My BMI sadly 61, 60 is preferred max for sleeve. I'm not sure how many surgeons but I've heard dr Sampath is the best only one I know of. Mexico sounds scary, sounds like it was ok? Bc medical covers surgery here.

Sounds similar to the preop process at most centres in the USA as well.

Surgery is covered in NS, but only if we meet their criteria (which I don't). Just being 100lbs overweight doesn't cut it, they're only covering surgery for patients over BMI 50, with diabetes and/or heart disease, immobilization from excess weight and probably half a dozen other conditions.

My surgeon in Mexico is one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the world. He does 7-8 sleeves and bypasses per day, compared to fewer than that per week for most American surgeons. He is regularly invited to speak at conferences in the USA to share some of his experience with bariatrics.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
