How much can you eat?

Recommended Posts

So I'm on purees now and I feel like I can eat way more than I should be able to. I'm able to eat like 5.5 oz of food over 30 minutes before I get the full sensation. I just had the RNY, shouldn't I only be able to eat like 2 oz before I feel full?

Is it different because of the food texture? Will I be able to eat more of the purees/soft foods, then less of the solids? I've lost 10 lbs since surgery, but haven't lost anything (in fact I've gained about .5 lb) in the last 3 days.... I'm already feeling like this was for nothing if I'm eating enough to gain weight! **I do think part of it is that for the majority of the first 2 weeks, I was only able to drink about 4 cups of Water a day, and I'm finally starting to drink closer to 8 cups**

So yes... how much can you eat post op? How much of softer foods? How much of more solid foods? How far out are you?

I feel the same as you about the quantity I sometimes I can eat. Really the only time I know I have had RNY is when I try and drink Water and can't drink that fast anymore. I am 6 weeks out and I can pretty much eat whatever I want. I stay with high Protein turkey chicken deli meats egg whites and vegetables mostly, more of healthy diet. I do find it easier to stick to this diet now than before pretty much I an only attribute it to the RNY. When I first started eating "normal" food I would see what it would take to get full and I realized for me the full feeling is different than before. Its more of an uncomfortable feeling now but maybe for others it is different. I know I can eat more than a few ounces which on Thanksgiving I proved that but never got that super full feeling like before. I work out twice a day and my weight loss has been a steady 4-5 pounds a week. I am sure it will slow down but I feel great being almost 50 pounds down in 6 weeks.

A couple of things I can offer from my own experience:

1) I could actually eat more a few weeks after surgery than I could a month or two out. When I was still actively healing, I really had no "full" sensation (nor did I have a hunger sensation), so I just focused on eating what I was supposed to and trusted it would all work out - it did.

2) Now that I am a little over 8 months post-op, I get the sensations of both being hungry and full. When it comes to quantity it totally depends on WHAT I'm eating. If I eat meat, I can eat very little. I can get in MAYBE 2-3oz of chicken or shrimp at most, and even that can be a struggle. However, I could eat a ton of Soup if I chose to. I generally limit myself to 1 cup (8oz), but am pretty sure I could put down 2 cups (16 oz).

So I imagine I could eat an almost endless amount of purees (my plan did not have a puree stage).

Don't think about what you CAN eat... think about what you are supposed to eat.

At a few weeks out, you are healing. Please don't experiment to 'see' what you can possibly eat, just weigh it and eat it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
