Anyone switched from VSG to RNY last minute?

Recommended Posts

So I was all set to go for my surgery and then I mentioned to the doctor that I felt like food got stuck in my esophagus and that took me down the road of getting an EGD and a esophageal manometry. EGD was fine but just go news the manometry revealed I do have issues with my esophagus not pushing food down properly. It doesn't hurt and really doesn't affect me but I am probably looking at having to switch to RNY. I feel like I know everything about the sleeve and nothing about RNY. I have surgery scheduled in one week. I'll find out for sure on Thursday what's going on and whether I have to switch surgeries. Just wondering if anyone else had dealt with this and switched so late in the game.

I didn't have a last minute switch, but went into mine not knowing which I'd end up with. I had a revision, dr said if there Is too much scarring I will do a sleeve, if it is fine, a rny. I wanted an rny. I found out when I woke up in recovery

I'm thinking of switching to RNY because I have Gerd. Have you found out what surgery you can get yet?

I am having RNY because I have acid reflux. I also love sweet foods and I hate feeling of being sick so I knew I wouldn't be tempted with sweets because I don't want to have dumping syndrome. I just felt the Bypass was better for me in the long run.

I did get switched to the RNY since my esophagus doesn't work right. I have no GERD, no reflux, nothing like that. Just my esophagus doesn't move food down towards my stomach like it should. I would say switching to the RNY is the scariest part of this. I was totally prepared for the sleeve but the RNY seems like such a bigger surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
