I am Scheduled for surgery on December 12 and have been on the pre op diet for two days now. Im just curious to know what everyones pre op diet was? My doctor gave me a list that said 3 Protein Shakes a day, ans then all of the fruit juice i can drink as long as no sugar added, all the broth i want, sugar free applesauce, pudding, and Jello, and low fat cottage cheese and greek yogurt. I just want to know if that sounds like a normal pre op diet to anyone because i thought it would be just liquids and no fruitjuice. thank you

It all depends on the surgeon. My pre op diet is 3 Protein shakes and all the leafy greens I want, provided I use fat free dressing. I just use vinegar. Only 6 days left

Mine is 4 shakes and 2 Protein bars a day with no deviation allowed. They also have me on it for 3 weeks because my BMI is over 50.

Frankly, I'm annoyed because I feel like they are treating me like a child. They should allow some leeway as long as I maintain the calorie and nutrient goals.

It fits with the general culture of this practice to be inflexible and not patient friendly. I picked them because the surgeon is very well regarded and was recommended by other doctors. The quality of the surgeon is most important to me so I begrudgingly put up with the rest.

I'm on a 2 week liquid Protein diet that consists of 80-100 grams of Protein and 800-1000 calories. Each Protein shake must be around 200 cal and very low sugar. Plenty of Water too. The sole purpose is to shrink the liver and loosen things up in the abdomen to make it easier for the surgeon and to get us ready for the 1st phase of the diet. Good luck everyone. My date is Dec. 12.

Diet sounds pretty similar to most. Every doctor has different requirements. In my practice there were several docs and all of them had a different pre-op diet!

The point is to shrink the liver and limiting added sugar will definitely do that. Natural sugar in the juices shouldn't hinder at all, it will only help keep your appetite in check.

My pre-op diet also included a serving of Metamucil daily. Sounds crazy, but it DID really help with appetite also. I'm back to doing that daily just to ward off the cravings.

It depends on the doctor AND the patient. I'm doing just 3 Premiere Protein shakes and 3 eight ounce cups of Lactaid milk a day. And taking BariActiv. 6 days in and I'm AMAZED at the energy I have! I thought this would kill me and I'd be all lethargic and weak, but I still walk 2-3 miles and lift weights every day. I'm not saying it's easy, just not near as hard as it sounds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
