Hungry! I week post op

Recommended Posts

I am a week post op today, I am always hungry. I feel like I'm starving, my tummy grumbles so hard and I dream of eating. I was not a food addict per se before the surgery. Mainly just ate large portions because of always being hungry. I wasn't really expecting this hunger pangs. The Protein Shakes do fill me up (I'm drinking almost 2 per day) and 32 oz Water and Gatorade per day. But I am ravenous, I feel like I haven't eaten in forever. I had a one week preop full liquid and have my second post op full liquid week to go. I've tried cream Soups, cream of wheat and drinkable yogurt. Is this normal? Why am I so hungry? Any pointers on how to combat this? Thank you!

When I was feeling that way, it was because of acid. I called my surgeon and she put me on Liquid Carafate for 2 weeks and helped tremendously. Mine was walking me up during the night.

Definitely if you aren't on a PPI or other means of controlling stomach acid, get on one. If you are on one, consult with your doctor about a stronger prescription or a different prescription.

Gastric sleeve surgery results in excess stomach acid (especially in the first several weeks) for a significant number of patients.

Symptoms of excess stomach acid include hunger and a growling, grumbling stomach.

@Bella2126 It helps coat your stomach. I would drink 10 mil before each meal and at bedtime. I did this for 2 weeks and it helped me get through the high acid content.

The acid hit me last night. At 5 am I woke up in burning pain. I drank some Galvescon and it provided a bit of relief. I called the sr and all they did was change me from pantaprozine to omerprazole (Prilosec). I have felt horrible all day, chest burning and exhausted. I am trying to drink but not going down well. Any suggestions? I feel like I took a major step back overnight. ☹️

When I was pre-op and then just after surgery I was mistaken in believing that the hunger hormone would be gone from the moment of surgery and on. Boy was that wrong. I have learned since then that it is actually quite common to have hunger after surgery. Some of it is head hunger, some of it is legit hunger. When on just liquids its no wonder.

I can say though now 8 weeks later your hunger will subside. Having "real" foods and soft foods really helps. At about 3-4 weeks my hunger literally just went away. I only feel hunger now when fuel is truly necessary. And am satisfied by a few bites of high Protein. So, it gets way better.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
