Questions, 7 days until surgery

Recommended Posts

Super nervous, seven days until surgery.

I'm having the full bypass on the 6th.

I feel so overwhelmed with information, I have a huge folder with tons of print outs and notes i've taken from support groups, doctor and nurse visits... but I still feel so unprepared.

I still haven't figured out what Protein Drink i'll be drinking post op. GNC had one that was supposedly tasteless. I haven't tried it yet. I've tried a bunch of others but they are just gross. I'm afraid I will have this surgery and not have a Protein shake.

Please, any advice or help?

try it. I suggest you list out the ones you have tried and didn't like and people will pipe in with alternatives. I mostly mixed in Protein with Soups etc. I was done with the shakes after my pre-op diet. I only just started them again because I found one i didn't mind with some additives.

I personally favor the Premier Protein drinks. They are already made so all you have to do is grab one and go. They actually taste pretty good. I believe there are about five different flavors of them. Bananas and cream is my favorite.

I have tried many many different Protein drinks...I can say that these are the ones that I like: Atkins has great drinks and they taste great, MYOPLEX Rich dark chocolate Muscle Milk banana flavored and Gramcracker mixed BUT...By far the best one for me is GENEPROunflavored. I am a coffee drinker so I take my Keurig Cup of coffee and Sweet Cream and add 1 scoop of GENEPRO!!! No taste n change in my coffee. So it is a WIN WIN because I would drink my coffee anyway so it is a plus!! One thing I would say don't buy a whole lot of Protein because most people's taste changes after their surgery and lets face it Protein stuff is NOT cheap. I would hate to really know how much money I spent on trying to find one that worked for me!!

Also I am also a fan of the premier Protein shakes I was advised not to drink them right away, as they contain milk and it might irritate my new stomach, and they were right. I was able to get them down, but with a lot of discomfort. I was instead told to only drink Protein Shakes whose first ingredient was whey Protein ISOLATE. Not blend or concentrate. The Vitamin shoppe has a really good brand called bodytech and it's actually really good. I went to GNC and noticed that they had one also that was their own brand. Hope this helps!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
