trekker954 421 Posted November 29, 2016 I'm 3 1/2 months out. 60 lbs down. Doing well, never sick, on top of Vitamins, good blood work. I travel a lot with work and for pleasure. I'll be 63 in January and can't say I exercise a lot. I did increase walking and bike riding but not excessively. Fast forward to arriving in Europe 6 days ago with my adult children for four countries Christmas market and general tours. After 5 days walking Munich, hiking up numerous castles I can barely touch my calves without grinding my teeth in pain. They even hurt to lie flat on my back because my calves hurt so much. We just arrive in Prague today. Tomorrow we have a four hour private walking tour. Should I persirvere or pass. I have no idea if I can do real damage if I push myself or if I'm just not use to using these muscle groups. I stir have 2 weeks to go. I'm just not knowledgeable about these things. highfunctioningfatman 2,675 Posted November 29, 2016 Get a Gatorade type of drink and eat Protein just before and after your walking. This will help those muscles tremendously!
Odie 249 Posted November 29, 2016 I had the same problem till I was advised, on this site to increase my sodium. It has helped my legs a lot!!
heidikat72 935 Posted November 29, 2016 Try finding something with potassium - even if it is eating a banana. Not sure if you'll be able to find Vitamin Water zero there but there is a potassium/b vitamin one in a purple fruit punch flavor.
shedo82773 1,236 Posted November 29, 2016 This might sound OFF THE WALL but...we have used this for years for cramps, we drink pickle juice and rub a little on your calfs. I really think it's the sodium in them, but I am not a Dr. But it sure works for us.
ReneK 107 Posted November 29, 2016 As many have said, staying hydrated is very important! And congratulations on your success!
WLSResources/ClothingExch 3,444 Posted November 29, 2016 (edited) Sure, hydration is important. If your pre-trip walking and cycling caused soreness in your calves to a lesser degree from the start, I hope you knew that the best way to heal it is to continue using those muscles. If the pain is as extreme today as you indicate, take a day off and ice your calves. Put a little, gentle stretch on your calves. While the others are doing the walking tour, do café time, write some postcards, read a paper and, above all, people-watch and check out all the gorgeous, Slavic cheekbones. Also be sure that you're wearing the right shoes for all the walking you're doing during your trip. Be glad it isn't shin splints. ShelterDog64 2,364 Posted November 29, 2016 @@WLSResources/ClothingExch is right on....you should take a day off, rest and ice your calves. Get some electrolytes and fluids in as well, and you should be back on your feet the next day.
trekker954 421 Posted November 30, 2016 I just hot back from my 4 hour tour. Lots of steps upward and cobblestone paths down. I think the down was more painful as it was steep. But gorgeous however zero degrees celcius. I will never, repeat never take a winter vacation again. My kids were thrilled I made it through. RJC5197 282 Posted November 30, 2016 I find as I get older that my muscles do not respond as before as well. When I am going to do anything more than I am used to, I have to stretch before and especially after to help, and most of all stay hydrated.
