5-7 minutes between bites? Is it true?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post-op on the puree/soft foods diet and my physicians assistant says I have to wait 5-7 minutes between each bite.

Nope. What is true is that you will have to take it slow and chew completely.

I thought that was pretty excessive. I know we're suppose to listen to our doctors but most of them have the knowledge not the experience. They only know what they read.

I need to wait a couple of minutes between bites of beef or calamari, but don't need to wait at all between bites of soft foods that are well chewed.

5 minutes between bites? It would take me over an hour to eat 3-4 oz!

I eat solid 3-4 oz food meals in 15-20 minutes. A little slower with chicken or fish a little faster with cottage cheese or Soup.

I was told to use little spoon or little fork.

Chew, chew, chew and then some more, put the little spoon/fork down.

Pause, then wash/rinse/repeat.

I still use my little plates, bowls, little spoons and forks, I quite like them now :)

My meals are only supposed to last 20 minutes, so no.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
