makeup on surgery day?

Recommended Posts

No, you should NOT wear makeup.

If you are intubated (breathing tube) they need to tape that in place, so if you were wearing a lot of makeup, the tape won't stick and I can't guarantee that what they use to take your make up off will be kind to your skin. Or if the tape desn't stick because of makeup, they may put something on your skin to make it sticky and that's no fun, either. Almost always your eyes are taped shut because of the paralytic you get during the surgery, they don't want your eyes to be open and get dry, so they get taped shut. There goes your eye make up and if your mascara isn't waterproof...

Also, with a lot of makeup, sometimes it can cause issues because of the electrical activity used in cutting and cauterization. I've seen pics of people with interesting burns (RARE) that had heavy make up on before surgery.

And to top it all off, you're probably not going to feel too much like washing it off after surgery, anyway.

No makeup allowed. That was the hardest thing for me - walking around the morning of my surgery, running last minute errands, nekked!!! Afterwards, you won't care - trust me!

I was told not to wear dark color nailpolish. You may wear some basic makeup right until you are to start changing into the clothes for the OR, but it would be best to remove it as soon as your dressed.

After my surgery I would have loved to put some color on my face,I looked translucent! :huytsao

Most people dont even want to bother with it the day of surgery, but if its important to you...than go for it.

Someone else wrote about burns related to heavy make up use....sorry but that is incorrect, being an OR nurse for over 15 years..I have never seen anything happen, or heard of it.

Actually, a lot of patients would come in for surgery with full makeup...just dont be surprised if its all messed up when you wake up.

The tape has no problem sticking to your face..whath hinders tape from sticking is lotion..so dont use any of that.

I have seen women that come into surgery with false eyelashes, and once the anesthesiologist removes the tape from their eyes, the eyelashes come off too...funny

Again, there is NO complications involved with makeup during surgery, its just easier if you go without it.

My gosh....that seems the height of vanity to me to feel the need to greasepaint yourself up for surgery? And just who are you going to impress?...the doctor who has you spread out like a slab of fish on a cutting board?

My instruction said "no makeup" but I asked if I could wear nail polish and they said yes bc their machine can read through any nail polish.

So the morning of surgery I went and got a mani/pedi to pass the time and de-stress!

Even though I didn't have makeup, my nails and toenails looked good!!

Thanks for the responses. I'm guess I don't actually care about wearing makeup during the actual surgery. I'm getting banded in Mexico on a Monday, and I will meet the doctor and have all of my pre-op testing done that morning, and I'd rather have my makeup on for that. I don't mind washing off the makeup when I'm getting ready for the surgery if I need to.

Hi, I am going to TJ Oct. 16. I was just wondering which Dr. you were using. Please keep us posted on how things go. Good luck. I never go without make up. I am with you.

Thank you so much for your post. I am laughing my ass off, rolling on the floor, with hysterical laughing with the picture you painted with your words.

I would say wear it then wash it off right before hand. for the simple fact that its probably gonna look worse if you leave it on during surgery then if you had a clean face.

cause your gonna have a tube and or mask

and taped eyes that is liable to smear your makeup all over. Which to me would be worse then having none on at all.

But I guess it all comes down to you and what your doctor decides if its an issue with you. Talk to the doctor about it.

Ok, this is an imporant issue for me! Is it ok to wear makeup during surgery?

They told me to wear no make up. They also told me to have no hair spray on my hair. Believe me. You won't care if you have make up on or not!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
