Looking for mentor or buddies...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I'm scheduled to have my gastric sleeve surgery on December 14.

I know I'm definitely going to need some support, someone to talk to who can relate to the day to day challenges of the post-op lifestyle.

If there is anyone who wants to be a mentor or buddy please let me know.

I'm currently 443 lbs and I know it's a long road to reach my goal weight, but with the assistance of the sleeve and the support of understanding people, I'm sure I can do it.:-D

I added you to my friends list. I was sleeved 10/26. Not long enough to be a mentor, but happy to be an open ear!

Thanks for responding Chrmow. I'm very happy to have you as a buddy and sympathetic ear!

Quick question, how is your weightloss progressing?

Hey Lisa! I would love for us to be buddies.

To add someone as a friend I believe you have to use the actual Bariatricpal website instead of the app. Via the website click on a member's name to reach their profile page and then you will see the option to add the member as a friend.

Good luck with your surgery on the 12, mine is scheduled for December 14 and yesterday my surgeon's office called me to ask if I would like to move up my surgery date to December 6, due to a cancellation. I have been debating the pros and cons all night. I think I'm probably going to stick with the date of the 14th, to give myself more time to prepare, and to gather the supplies I will need for after the surgery. I apologize for rambling on and on. I'm just thinking out loud to try and make up my mind, and I'm nervous as hell about the surgery. Lol.

I'm nervous too, I know I need it but you hear so many horror stories on these sites. I've heard lots of success stories as well though. I think sticking to your original date is probably a smart move. We'll be fine. Have you started your pre-op diet? I start mine on Monday.

My surgeon told me I didn't need a pre-op diet because I had lost another 20 lbs since I saw him 4 weeks ago. I simply have to do "liquids only" the day before, and don't eat or drink after midnight the night before.

I have to be at the hospital at noon, and my surgery is scheduled for 2:30 pm. I was told the surgery takes 1 hour.

I have to stay overnight and go home the next day. I'm a little nervous because I was also told that I would need to take a medication for blood clots as a precaution.

My nervousness comes from the fact that I will have to administer the medication via injection in my stomach twice a day, and I'm not especially keen on giving myself shots.

However, because I once had a blood clot situation in the past, I know how dangerous that situation can be.

I'm sure we'll both be fine, just gotta relax and take things day by day, right..?

I know what you mean on the shots, I am a diabetic and I had a really hard time giving myself shots at first. My best advice for that is don't think about it and just do it. I would sit there for like 45 minutes trying to psych myself up, and in the end I still had to give myself the shot, so just do it.

My surgery is out patient and I'm a little nervous about not staying at least one night.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
