Hi everyone! I am new to the site and just found out today that I am approved for the lap band.....I am very excited....and nervous. I have been looking at the post on "complications" and I guess it has got me somewhat worried. It would be horrible to have to have your band removed, but I still think that the band is the best choice for me.

I would appreciate any advice anyone has to give!

Thanks

Welcome and congrat's on your new journey!

Well you went right to the worst case picture -- now remember that is not the majority!

Take inventory - -if you don't have the lap-band surgery what complications are possible for you personally - High BP; Heart Disease; Hi Blood sugar and so forth ... all the way to possible early death?

You've read the complications if you do have surgery --

WHICH is the right choice for you????

Wish you the best of luck in this new journey - whichever way you go.

Welcome to the lapband site and your decision to get banded. Now that you have read the complications, stay away from thst site. I am 16 months out and right at goal and I can truly tell you that if you have a good surgeon and follow his instructions you will be fine. Its normal to be a little nervous, we all were. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life and would do it again in a heartbeat. The best of luck to you.

Thank you guys for your encouragement! I know that this is the best option for me to prevent future medical conditions, I have never had any surgical procedures before, so I guess that is also adding to my nervousness!

How did everyone adjust to not being able to eat like you once did? Was going out to eat difficult in the beginning?

Thank you all again!

Darlene

It is normal and as the day get's closer - you will question your decision --this is normal.

For me -- eating by myself is hardest.

And you will go through stages of being able to eat - then get filled and not.

Only now - 5mos out; 4th fill do I have what I thought I would have immediately following surgery as far as restriction and NOT able to eat anything I want to. Whew -- glad I got here - only been 1 week - so hoping it stays.

Best wishes.

I never really thought about eating alone being difficult, but now that I think about it I guess it would because you don't have someone to talk to and help pace yourself with eating to fast.

Are you exercising as well? I have turned into a couch potatoe and don't excercise that much anymore.....that will be another thing I will have to change. I used to love to take kick boxing class at the Y, but that has been years ago.

You are doing great with your weight loss!

Thanks so much for your support.

I have started exercising (officially) the last of August. Bought a recumbent bike Catrike Performance Trikes and ride 5 miles or so a day (missed 4 days so far in Sept.). I have some health issues so I am restricted to the type of exercise - but so far this is working.

Eating alone is hard -- I guess I am what you might classify as closet eater. If I am with others - I do good - I know what they expect to see me eat and that makes me accountable. When it is just me -- you never know...

I wish you the very best in this journey! Kepp in touch.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
