Sleeve and hiatal hernia

Recommended Posts

I had sleeve with a hiatal hernia. I had to take PPI meds for two months but have been fine since. I am three years out.

Hernia found, and repaired, during my sleeve surgery. I haven't experienced any side effects.

My surgeon and actually every surgeon in our hospital does routinely does hernia repair when they do a sleev. However there is an exception with some locations and size. If you trust your on do advised if you're not sure get a second opinion.

I had a Very Large hernia (about the size of a plum), and was 200 pounds overweight. As a result, the decision was to wait until I got to my 2nd Milestone (250 lbs.) and then make the hernia surgery a 1-time fix. The surgery team, and a lot of , stated that hernias often recur when there is too much pressure on the mesh insert (a REAL risk for a large hernia, like mine).

After 100 pounds gone, however, I developed an intestinal block, and the hernia was removed as emergency surgery. The only downside has been that even though I feel fine, I can't return to training or bike riding until January. I was advised to give the scar tissue about 6 months to fully seal in the mesh patch.

Remember that my experience is based on a LARGE hernia. If yours is small, the wait may not be necessary.

GERD is pretty much universal for sleeve patients, but it's tolerable for those who didn't have it before.

Hiatal hernia is more or less synonymous with GERD. If you already have bad GERD, I'd think carefully about a sleeve. Could make it much worse.

I had heard that too but here's the funny thing for me. I have had acid reflux for at least a decade. When prepping for my sleeve surgery, it was discovered that I had a hiatal hernia. My surgeon and I talked about how a sleeve can often increase acid reflux. But I wasn't comfortable with any other option so we decided to go forward with the sleeve. And my acid reflux is gone! It's been 3 months and anything can happen, but for now it's gone. Surgeon thinks my reflux might have been due to the hernia. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My surgeon did my sleeve and (small) hernia repair at the same time. Tomorrow is my 6 month surgiversary and reflux is way better than it was.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
