My gastric sleeve has been a total failure!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery August 30, 2014. Every day since then I have suffered with severe nausea and vomiting. When I woke up from surgery I also had a runny nose and every time I eat my nose pours After a few bites I get so nauseated that I can't finish and or I start vomiting. And the really sad thing is I have lost very little weight. What I can eat is junk, popcorn, chips, candy. I can only drink a small amount of fluids or I throw up if I drink too much. I take Prilosec twice and day and a probiotic twice a day. I have no energy and dread every meal. Thanksgiving we went out to eat, I took 3 bites and ran to the restroom to throw up. I have had several EGDs done, all normal and a test where I drank and they timed it and it was normal. My surgeon has written me off, said he knew of nothing else to do. Am I going to be liked this the rest of my life? Help, please

If you can eat junk without throwing it up then u can eat regular food u should be eating perhaps there's a psychological reason behind the nausea ? Maybe a therapist wouldn't be a bad idea at least try it see if it helps

I would get a second opinion from a different bariatric surgeon if you haven't already. Is there a possibility that revision to bypass would help your issues?

As far as eating goes, can you tolerate foods that are healthier, such as yogurt or cottage cheese?

I agree with bufflehead, go to a different Bariatric surgeon.

Have they done the test (xray?) that shows the shape of the sleeve from the outside?

I have heard of an incorrectly-shaped sleeve causing these issues. Specifically, wide on the ends and skinny in the middle/barbell.

Have you tryed eating foods with broth nothing with to much in it so you can get your stomach used to it... Try tofu ( soft) cut it up and get those packs of tofu miso Soup. Try this stop all junk food.. Every time your hungry eat this if you need to mix it up boil a couple of chicken breasts put some spinach's alitte maybe some barley..... Super bland....start that way.. Hope this helps...

Are you tracking and logging your food? How many calories, carbs and fat grams are you taking in daily? That might help you determine why you are not losing. Also, how much Water are you taking in? Are you exercising at all?

Your experiences are VERY much like mine at your stage in the game. I had a slight stricture and had to take an anti nausea pill as well as a pill that made my stomach seize and cramp every time I ate for about 3-4 months.

I stayed on the full liquids stage for 2 weeks, and then pureed for about 3 more. I moved very slowly with food progression and was not able to tolerate more than a tablespoon at a time. I was almost a full year out before I could eat more than 600-800 calories a day or meet my Protein and Fluid goals.

I would encourage you to STOP eating popcorn, chips and definitely candy. You are wasting a lot of valuable real estate when you put junk in your teeny tummy. Concentrate on Protein shakes and in one really soft Protein at a time until you catch your rhythm. I loved chicken salad with extra mayo, crab cakes made with no bread, finely diced shrimp salad, guacamole and hummus on a spoon, refried Beans, soft scrambled eggs...

Good luck to you.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I do eat yogurt, Soups, eggs, rice and smoothies made with light apple juice and non sweetened fruits. Things that do not require a lot of effort to digestive do stay down but still make me nauseated. My stomach feels like it is in spasms as soon as food hits it. I have given up spicy foods for over a year, tried Protein Shakes only for weeks and the nausea never let up. I think I will see a another surgeon for a 2nd opinion. Thanks so much.

You could have a hernia that's what happened to me the week after my surgery. I had to have another surgery a week later and I've been fine ever since. Ask your doctor to order you a CT scan of your abdominal region

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
