4 days post-op, trouble staying awake?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just wondering...is it common to be extra, extra sleepy all the time after getting the vsg? The last pain medication I took was around 4am. I'm to take it every four hours as needed, so it usually wears off by the 4 hour mark. I have slept all day long and am still tired. I could lie down right now and fall asleep easily. I'm not light-headed or anything unusual, but the constant sleeping is making is difficult to get all my fluids and Protein in. I try to stay awake and keep myself focused, but I drift off while reading, watching tv, knitting, browsing the internet, etc. When I'm awake, I try to walk as much as possible, but the second I'm done, I'm ready for another nap.

I'm not ready to drive just yet and there are limited places in my house where I can get comfortable, so I feel a bit tied to my bedroom.

I've never had any kind of surgery or anything done, so I thought maybe my body is still just in "wtf did you do to me" mode, but I'm not sure. My post-op appointment is on Wednesday and I'll bring it up then if there is no immediate cause for concern.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thank you all!

I slept a lot too, in between walking and sip sip sipping.

I was 10 days out and a friend came for lunch. After 15 minutes I had to leave her finishing her meal (the rest of my family were there) and I went to bed and slept for about 4 hours.

Your body has been through a massive change. Rest and sleep when you need to.

Congratulations on the surgery :)

Kate

In the first week or two post-op, I slept all the time. Fatigue remained a significant issue for me until about six weeks post-op. I still have my moments (exercise hits me differently depending on the day) even now (2 months post-op on Monday), but it is finally better for the most part.

The pain meds made me sleepy so I went off of them after 2 days and only had pain when standing or getting out of bed. Was very manageable though. I did take a nap everyday and felt fatigue for about 3 mths.

Yes I was exhausted for two or three weeks. But when my energy returned it was fantastic!

My doctor prescribed some nasal B12 which you do once a week and that may help you. It's called Nascobal 500mcg/spray. My insurance didn't cover it. And my doctor's office gave me a $25 off coupon for it and I paid $25 for a 4 week supply. 1 each week.

So ask your doctor about it

I could barely rouse enough energy to stand up for my shower. Yeah pretty normal post op between the recovery and the lack of calories. Hang in there it gets better!

Thank you all for your responses! This has been very reassuring! I've been awake more today and even left the house and drove for the first time! It's great being out, but as I came to a cafe to do work for school, I realized how difficult it was to focus. Lots of brain fog! I'm plugging away, but definitely a little frustrating. Thankfully, it sounds like it improves with time!

My Dr compared energy levels of a new Bariatric patient to a puppy... burst of energy but needs to sleep a lot. Day 6 for me and it's looking up. Best of luck.

I also slept a lot the first week. I had bursts of energy but it usually quickly faded and I took a lot of naps. Second week it's a little better. I'm starting my fourth week and I'm 90% normal but feel tired once in awhile.

I'm 3 weeks out and I tried to sleep through the whole healing process... It's good to shut down for a bit just not all the way down...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
