Getting enough protein without protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I was able to eat enough Protein and only had 1 Protein shake. The Protein shakes are meant to help you get Protein if you aren't able to consume the protein you need with actual food. Am I wrong to only have one? I'd prefer to not have shakes at all and just get protein from the foods on my list of what I can eat.

Here's what I ate yesterday:

Breakfast

1.5 oz natural Peanut Butter - 9 grams protein

1 4oz sugar free applesauce (my pills mixed in with it)

lunch

2 hard boiled eggs with a tablespoon of mayo - 12 grams protein

1 4oz serving sugar free pudding

snack

2oz pureed chicken - 15 grams protein

2 tablespoons mashed potato - 1 gram protein

dinner

4 oz pureed turkey - 18 grams protein

4oz Protein Shake - 34 grams protein

TOTAL PROTEIN = 89 GRAMS

As long as you get your Protein in it is fine to have only one shake or no shakes if you can make that work. I am 5 mths out and still have a shake for Breakfast. It starts my day out right knowing I ha e so much protein right away. And it keeps me full for 3 hrs.

Like suzzzz said, get your Protein however you can, doesn't matter from food or shakes. Personally, my restriction was so tight I couldn't get enough solid food to meet goals for a long time. For example, I couldn't eat more than 1/2 an egg at a time for at least 6 months. I also wanted to make sure I was incorporating a balanced diet including fruits, veggies and whole grains, so I drank Protein Shakes for several years. Still do when I'm on the run and too busy to sit down and eat

One thing I would suggest is spreading your Protein out through the day. You've got almost none for breakfast and then over 50g for dinner. A lot of studies indicate that our bodies cannot absorb more than 20g protein/hour. Maybe try having that shake for breakfast instead.

Once I was able to add in salmon at Week 6, I was able to get all of my Protein in with no shakes. Now that I have progressed through all of the food stages, it is even easier to do so. The only time I have had a Protein shake in the last few weeks was a day I was going to be flying all day, and it was just easier to front load a shake before I headed to the airport.

To do this, I have to eat about 8 times in a day -- an hour-and-a-half apart. I can only eat about 2 oz of meat with 1 oz of green Beans at a time. The only thing I can eat more of is cottage cheese. I can eat about 4 oz of that.

Your able to consume 8 Oz at one meal? I thought it was only supposed to be 3 Oz tops.

I didn't consume the 4oz turkey and the 4oz shake at the same time. I had the turkey first and then the shake over an hour later. Maybe even 90 minutes later.

Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey has 30 grams of protein per scoop. That plus 4 oz of skim milk totals 34 grams per 4oz protein shake. It's a brand my surgeon has on his list of protein powders to choose from. I get it on Amazon.< /p>

I am very close to you in size/weight and am aiming for 100 grams of Protein a day. My diet is similar with regard to meat. I have Quest Protein Bars for Snacks. I have a giant tub of Gold Standard Extreme Milk chocolate sitting in the kitchen. It is as close to a glass of regular chocolate milk as one can get, and with 8oz skim milk, it gives me 32 grams of Protein.< /p>

ETA: I don't have a shake every day, as I am hitting my goal and then some without them ,but a glass of "chocolate milk" goes down very easy and satisfies what is left of my sweet tooth.

Not sure if you are more than 3 months out or not. My surgical team told us that the first 3 months we needed at minimal 60-90g of Protein supplemented on top of what we ate..to ensure we weren't losing muscle.

My Dr prefers you get Protein from real sources rather than shakes which have tons of fake ingredients. Can't wait until I can progress to that stage

I'm only 9 days post op..there's no way I can get enough Protein from food at this point..not sure anybody can which is why they have that recommendation. I'm only eating 2 oz protein at meal time, so I have to supplement. They say minimally 60g but was better to take your weight and half it..that was optimal protein level. So 200 lb person should try and get in 100g protein.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
