Well, I don't know what to tell you about your hair returning to normal. I had my surgery over 8 years ago. At the time my hair was long and fine. I started taking Biotin before the surgery and still lost a good bit of hair. I had to get it cut short. I take 10000mg of Biotin daily and my hair has only improved slightly. Only difference I have seen since it started growing back was that it came back curly. I still have to keep it short and I guess that's just the way it's going to be for me. It is also very dry even though I use an intense condition twice a week. That was the one drawback for me but I still do not regret getting the surgery. I know it's very important to get your Protein in daily. That is something I struggle with because I don't have much of an appetite anymore. I guess my hair was collateral damage. Now, that's just me. Everyone's hair is different so don't despair. Keep taking your biotin and get a good conditioner and talk to your hairdresser for some advice. Good luck!!!

I have alopecia with pcos anyway so I'm very tempted to just get shaved before surgery. Here is my list of natural products that helped strengthen my hair up.

banana & beer hair mask.

Argan Oil leave in conditioner

Natural coconut Shampoo.< /p>

I have used Nioxin before but it burnt my scalp so not worth it but Selenium is a good extra to take as it strengthens hair and nails.

Gryffen....what dosage of selenium do you use? I'd definitely be interested in adding this to my supplements. Thank you for the other suggestions also! hair loss is really traumatic....at least it was for me!

In addition to Biotin and other nutrients, Iron is a must. I knew this from another time I lost weight. Surgeon suggested starting this immediately both for hair and for energy level. I notice that I am getting a bit more tired than usual. I am 4 months out.

Not directed at you because your doctor recommended it, but to others please don't take Iron without knowing if you're iron deficient and without having your doctor instruct you to do so. It's one of those supplements that can do real harm to you if you don't need it.

Not sure what research you are referring to on Iron? I believe the medical community to which I belong would probably disagree. I do though agree that people should check with their doctors just like with any nutritional supplement. It is well-documented in the literature that patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery tend to run low in iron and Vitamin B-12 and so most surgeons recommend taking them post-operatively and for the long run. Oral iron in the right dose is generally safe for most. After all, many Multivitamins contain iron. I am actually surprised you are not taking it. But good for you that you don't need them. You must be absorbing more nutrients than most.

Hi Sunny, I got mine via doctor due to low levels and blood transfusion but my MV contain 200mcg of selenium. I can get them for about £12 for 240 tablets out Holland and Barrets (I'm Scotland) but I'm sure any good health shop will have them.

I don't dispute those deficient in iron will benefit from a supplement, just that because iron is fat soluble and is generally stored in organs rather than eliminated that it shouldn't be taken if not needed, and that people shouldn't pick their own dosage without doctor input.

Materna Multivitamin. I take one in the morning and one at night. I have tons of baby hair growing in my head and I don't have to take any other Vitamin supplement. Gone are the days I was constantly chewing on Biotin, Calcium or Multivitamin gummies. My tongue would feel raw from all those gummies.

I am taking Nourkin supplements, using Regaine 5% foam (Rogaine in the USA) and using the hairmax lasercomb. No idea if any of it is working really.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
