Mood swings / Anger after surgery

Recommended Posts

I just had my gastric bypass surgery on Nov 21st 2016 and I suffered from depression before my surgery. I have continued taking my anti depressants under my doctors orders. I have an appointment with him on monday and I will discuss further with him. I know Im only a few days out but what I was wondering from those who have had the surgery is if feelings of anger and bitterness toward others is normal? My lovely wife has been so good in helping me and looking after me but I still snap at her and kind of act like a d**k at some points becaus of mood swings which makes me feel worse. As I write this Im pretty upset and was just wondering if others have dealt with anger and emotional outbursts and if so how long they will last? Is it different in men than it is in women? With it being Thanksgiving and all I feel angry and bitter toward everyone eating nice food and being happy while Im laid up in bed sipping Water and Protein shakes.

This won't answer all of your questions and I'm still pre-op myself but I have heard that after surgery (and really during any big weight loss phase) you will experience hormone dumping. Your fat stores hormones, and as your fat cells shrink as you lose weight, those hormones come out and can affect your mood and personality.

I've also heard that a lot of people go through a grieving process immediately after surgery (and some people even feel like they regret their surgery) because they are still healing and get upset that people around them can just eat whatever food without thinking about it. So that's pretty normal. Once you really start seeing and feeling the weight loss effects of your surgery, you probably will get past this grieving/regret/anger stage. (But still talk to your doctor).

One thing I would say though, in regard to your last comment about it being Thanksgiving and everyone but you eating yummy food, is that you need to keep in mind that you had this surgery, not your family and friends. You can't blame them for eating "normal." Your normal is different now.

Hopefully your mood will even out soon, but try to let your wife know that you can't help your mood. I'm sure she will understand. And then make it up to her in a few weeks when you're feeling better. Happy wife happy life, as they say!

As she said. The studies out there say that hormones are stored in our fat. So as we lose they are released and it can play havoc with our emotions!! The food issues are for REAL!! But...with that being said it will get better too. Hang on and just try to explain to your wife that all will be good. food issues work on our minds hard!!! Our WLS gives us the tools to lose the weight but it definitely doesn't fix our minds!!

As you lose weight, the chemicals and hormones that were stored in your fat cells are being released into your body. These will pass through your kidneys and are expelled in your urine. But they can generate a flush of hormones during the weight loss phase. They should simmer down once you transition into maintenance. It is important to meet your daily Fluid requirements, because it take fluids to flush these hormones from your system.

So far I have had the crying while talking with people and just today I blew up on my Team Lead. She didn't deserve it, it just came out. The past two days I have been angry and I don't know why. I can't wait for the mood swings to go away.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
