Gastric Bypass or Sleeve and Why?

Recommended Posts

Just curious why one would chose one over the other? Other than talking to your surgeon and hearing their advice? I have not yet started the process but want to have what I want in mind when I go!

I personally chose the sleeve because I know several people who had full bypass and had many many health issues afterwards. The sleeve is a restrictive process that does exactly that, it restricts the amount that you can eat at any time, whereas the bypass is both restrictive and malabsorbtive so it not only restricts, but stops your body from absorbing the calories, nutrients and Protein.

It really is a personal decision based on your needs and where you are comfortable.

I spent many years say absolutely not to WLS, but that was before the sleeve was available, once I researched my brain to death about it, I changed my mind about WLS.

For me it was very simple......I needed the ability to take Advil or other nsaids. Surgeon was very educational and helped me decide to sleeve. Glad I did.

I looked at the long term results and decided maybe losing an extra 20 pounds with bypass was not worth having my intestines touched. The sleeve results are so close to RNY, I didn't think it was worth the malabsorption. I still get to be a normal person with just a smaller capacity.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
