18 days Post Op and not sure if things are normal or not... Help! :)

Recommended Posts

My plan had me on liquids for three weeks, then purees for another couple weeks. Didn't try soft foods till 6 weeks out. Even then it was just couple tablespoons/day. I can't imagine transitioning any faster than that. There's no way I could have done soft food at 18 days out. Maybe your sleeve just isn't ready. Go as slow as you need to and stick with what you can tolerate for now. And when you do advance, only add one new thing every few days. That way if you have a bad reaction you know exactly what caused it. you don't feed a new baby formula one day and then stage 2 peas, beef and noodles the next day. Think of your sleeve as a newborn baby.

That's what I'm worried about though, I can't even tolerate puréed food. I'm still on Clear Liquids cause even the most sloppy purées cause so much pain and dumping, I've actually only tried three times and it's happened every time.

Surgeon is sending me for a barium scan to see what's going on and to make sure there isn't a leak happening, which I'm sure isn't the case and I'm just taking a bit more time to heal :)

How much are you trying to eat? I'd say no more than a teaspoon every 4-5 hours (that's all I could tolerate) But even so, the pain and dumping you are experiencing doesn't sound right. The most discomfort I ever felt was bloating and fullness. Glad your surgeon is addressing your issues.

I find I dump if I eat or drink too fast. Even with the Protein shake. When I go slow...no dumping. I will dump if I take even just one big gulp of shake. I'm also religiously following the no Water for a while after meals rule. I don't ever want to dump again.

It seems that I dump more easily with liquids because it passes through more quickly.

I had a hard time with fruits, maybe because of the sugar content. Have you tried cottage cheese or unsweetened applesauce? Those seemed to be the easiest for me to digest at first.

I can barely eat a teaspoon even if I'm going super slowly. If I'm drinking a smoothie or Soup I'm lucky to fit 50mls. And as soon as I swallow anything the pain is instant and makes me sweat and dizzy. Anything that is a little bit more "dense" is even worse.

I just hope it's all normal, I'll find out on Thursday I guess

I tried a puréed cottage cheese mixed with avocado and that made me dump, and I've had the unsweetened baby food purée apples and was the same. Too scared to try anything else ????

Oh thanks. I actually didn't know not to sip on Water after meals, maybe that's what's happening? I've been told to sip all day but water is tasting pretty blergh and makes me feel a bit spewy. Thankyou for your advice :)

Hi everyone, I'm 18 days post op. Thanks Nicky6 I thought I was the only one who had similar symptoms. what I find works for me is to take my meds first, then wait a while then have one egg scrambled. I only get a few bites in, wait a while then have my fluids through out the day. for the evening I will have a few table spoons of cuppa Soup (chicken or veg), wait a while then go back to my fluids. that what I find works for me at the moment, I did have trouble in the beginning with trying to balance fluids and meals (soft foods ect). I do hope that you find what works for you luv. Xx :-)

I'm 20 days out, and I can't even have eggs or other soft food for another 10 days. Maybe you are trying to advance to quickly. I'm on liquids and pureed now but I only eat 1/2 c of pureed food 2X a day MAX. I can honestly say my stomach is always growling in hunger and I never really feel satisfied but I think that will calm down once I'm on more solid food. Has anyone else felt hunger like I do, this early in the game?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
