First Few Weeks Post Op. Any tips or tricks?

Recommended Posts

I am on my first week post op and I was wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks that they discovered through their first few weeks? I'm just curious about things that might make transitioning easier.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi @@AweLauren --

I am also a newbie here -- I just had surgery on 11/7. I am already down 24 pounds which is wicked scary for me to see if all flying off so fast. I have been just really taking things slow with myself and being patient. My biggest obstacle is making wise choices since I have been advanced to the pureed stage of things. This makes it tricky, because I get a little hungrier than just being on the Protein shakes and I am also exercising 4 times per week.

However, I have quickly learned to try to ignore HEAD HUNGER where you brain tells you to eat because heck, you should and it's what you are used to doing. I have 2 little ones and cooking for them is sometimes stressful because I am used to tasting their foods. Had to quit that also.

What has helped me the most aside from joining this forum a few days ago -- is JOURNALING my feelings about food, my emotions, and the times I tried to indulge in something I shouldn't have only to be found laying in the fetal position in PURE pain.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who may be further along -- or just hear about what you have experienced as well? When was your surgery?

THart

Hi THart,

Thankfully I don't have kids and I am not to the hungry point yet. I had my surgery on the 15th. My experience has been pretty good so far. Just focusing on making sure I get enough liquids. Talking about it a lot helps. I talk my Dad's ear off about and posting here has been helping as well. I think the biggest thing is just to know that it's a process. Things won't be this difficult for long. I have a cousin that had the surgery done a year ago. She was 300 plus pounds. She couldn't hold down a job and had personal life issues. A year later, she's working in Paris at her dream job and eating normally but it much smaller portions. She is doing great and very happy she did it. It changed her life in such a positive way. It's all about staying positive and on the right track.

For me, it's helping just to be able to talk about my weight with others and actually admitting my problems. I hated going any where before because I was just ashamed of myself and I hope that will be getting better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
