SOON_TO_BE_THIN 25 Posted November 19, 2016 If you are moving towards surgery, you can always start prepping now. Get in your fluids.....cut down on sugars and carbs....don't make yourself heavier while stressing about surgery. Remember that surgery is not a magic pill...you still have to work hard. It's easy to feel defeated. Keep your eye on the prize and your chin up. Good luck with your journey. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
blizair09 3,250 Posted November 19, 2016 My insurance required me to do a six-month diet program before they would approve the surgery. So, I decided that I was going to make the most of that time and try to lose as much weight as I could before the surgery date. And I did! Not only did I lose 99 pounds pre-op (from March 21 until September 28), but I also re-established my relationship with food, started an exercise program, and set myself up for a successful surgery, a nearly seamless recovery, and continued weight loss success post-op. (I've lost an additional 36 pounds since my surgery on September 28.) My advice -- get started now. You'll start to feel better, and you'll set yourself up for more success later. Good luck! janedoe92 260 Posted November 19, 2016 I agree I'm in the same boat as you and I felt so bad for myself I gained some weight which I feel made it worse, but now I'm practicing stuff like not drinking while eating (I recommend trying this to make it a habit it's super hard IMO) cutting sugar out (I'm a sugar addict) and carbs keeps you focus and you loose the weight:) keep the goal in mid you'll do great! MissJDVSG 129 Posted November 19, 2016 I'm someone who feels better when I am planning ahead. I do this with almost every aspect of my life. This works well when I am feeling down, as well. Plan your meals for the week, better yet, meal prep! Try to make them high Protein and low carb like you'll be eating post op. Maybe make a list of non-scale victories that you're excited to reach. I have tons of clothes from all different sizes, so one day I organized all the clothes. I make a throw out (too torn up to donate), a donate pile (things that are good but I wouldn't personally enjoy wearing again), and clothes to keep, which I organized by size. Sorry for all the examples, but basically I feel like planning things out that will move you closer to your goals will make you feel better. Hokie-Amber 5 Posted November 22, 2016 I definitely understand where your coming from, everyone is right. Get started now. My girlfriend who literally was a blessing from god had gastric surgery 3 years ago. When we met I had no idea that she had the surgery and we just clicked. She has been my saving grace because she knows what its like and she has given me advice and has helped me stay motivated. She has gained 40LBs since her Gastric Surgery because of food, soda and wine. So she said my working towards this surgery is giving her motivation to get back on track herself. They are right, this is not a magic pill, you have to put in work and its best to get yourself started now so it wont be such a major shock and you wont fail. I understand being fat sucks, I hate it but I got to get better and its best to show those doctors that your motivated for post surgery.
heidikat72 935 Posted November 22, 2016 Like another poster, I took my 6 month pre-op period to start making changes. I gradually adjusted my diet and calorie reduction over those months while slowly increasing activity - managed to lose 78lbs in that time and increased my mobility and core strength which were vital for my post op recovery. I also researched everything I could about the surgery and life post-op even years down the road. And believe me - that time went by much faster than I thought it would!
