So I am 20 years old and I got the gastric bypass last year. I am in college and lately I smoked some pot. And I'm not quite done with it. Will smoking Pot mess up my surgery?

As with so many things after surgery, it depends on the person. It can give some people HORRIBLE munchies, which is a slippery slope after we've had surgery to shrink our stomachs. I smoke regularly, though not very much of it, to actually stimulate my appetite and help me sleep, which are both issues I've had since surgery. However, I know for a fact that for some people, the side effects (munchies, sleepiness/laziness, etc) can be detrimental. It's just been a positive habit for me, personally. So I would say just be aware of how it affects you and keep close tabs on your habits, and if it's more negative than positive of an effect, re-evaluate your priorities. If it starts being a problem rather than a solution for me at any time, I have no qualms about quitting. Hope my perspective and experience helps. :)

My bariatric doctor shared it is easy for people post bariatric surgery to trade a food addiction for another unhealthy addiction such as too much alcohol, smoking, overdoing exercise, etc. I suggest you ask yourself why you are smoking and what benefit are you getting and why smoking versus other productive activities.

Thank you all. Well I have been eating a lot anyway even when im not smoking and I already feel I have ruined my surgery. And I'm scared. I started college in august and was 179 and now I'm 198. I'm scared! I've been eating a lot of junk lately but it's hard I mean I'm in college and the surgery didn't fix my brain.

@@ejsisman - don't panic! Your surgery still happened. Your stomach is still surgically altered. The ability to fix this is still there. Just go back to basics. Protein first, cut out white bread/pasta, drink more Water, etc. And maybe use something like myfitnesspal to record your intake for a while, it's a great tool to help you get back on track. I know many people think you can stretch the pouch, but multiple Bariatric surgeons have told me that it's not. All that happens is we get better at pushing certain foods (usually slider/unhealthy foods) through our stomachs faster. Go back to eating what you should be and viola! You'll be losing weight again. You're still in control here. Don't give up that control just because you gained some weight back. The tool will always be there, now it's up to you to utilize that tool. I believe in you! Don't give up. :)

I feel like totally giving up @@Cervidae! It's hard because the surgery didn't fix my brain. All my mom buys is junk food and my taste buds get so bored. I have a really hard time not eating those little Debbie Snacks and other crap. I don't know what to do

You have a tool to use that will help you. Make better choices. You alone can fix your brain. Don't give up too fast. Follow the instructions you were given. Log your food, that is how you will train your brain. Fight the good fight and you will be so proud of yourself????

I wish you were getting more support from your mom but it is up to you!! With that food in the house, the munchies won't help!! I am 2 1/2 yrs out and have to buy food for my son, who eats, and eats, and eats!! Also has the munchies like you!! My grand-daughter is here every weekend and eats and eats!! Tonight I had to make her pudding but I do it! Recently I regained 8 pounds so I started on the food tracker that is available on this site and making sure to drink my water! You can do this, just be positive!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
