Gypsy52 5 Posted November 19, 2016 I'm curious if anyone has been tested before surgery. Did they just test for nicotine? Or did they test for cotinine? Cotinine stays in your system longer than nicotine. I'm having such a hard time quiting. Sent from my LG-H901 using the BariatricPal App
Farcaster 80 Posted November 19, 2016 Smoking is going to impact how you heal and raises your chances of having complications. Instead of thinking about how you might fool the screening process, talk to your doctor and ask for help. There are pharmaceutical options that could help you. (BTW, I quit smoking 16 years ago, so I can relate on how hard it is to finally quit.)
Treadmillwalker 486 Posted November 19, 2016 In my bariatric Group a person reported the surgeon canceled her surgery because she was still smoking. She didn't say which test, just that she flunked it. She is still working to quit. Had lapband surgery 10/12/
Gypsy52 5 Posted November 19, 2016 Not really trying to fudge the screening process. Just trying to determine a deadline for myself. I understand that nicotine is out of your system in approx. a week and cotinine can take up to a month depending on fat saturation. I was just curious which one they tested for. Sai 785 Posted November 19, 2016 They used the cotinine test for me (urine test). Added: Can buy testing strips on Amazon so you can see how long it takes before you test negative.
mrsNilla 304 Posted November 19, 2016 Just saying... try to quit well before you start your pre-op diet, otherwise you have to do two battles at the same time. Twice as hard to succeed. Nilla
BunnyBenson 14 Posted November 20, 2016 Agree with all the posts about quitting to promote healing! But to answer your question they're gonna test for cotinine. I quit for my job testing and it took 10 days for the cotinine test to be negative. I was a pack a day smoker up until I quit. Hope that helps Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using the BariatricPal App

Sent from my LG-H901 using the BariatricPal App The first 3 days is the hardest......I know it's such a struggle but you can do it !!! I downloaded an app to Celebrate my success and it helped me when I quit cold turkey because trying to replace that feeling nothing can compare made me relapse. Good luck sorry I dont know the length of the tests staying in ur system Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App

I'm a nurse BTW. It took a few more times to finally quit. Don't give up, you're not a failure!! PissiChrissi 200 Posted November 20, 2016 My doctor was smart and didn't make me quit. He knows I wouldn't have and most others with either. I had 0 complications. Doesn't mean they can't happen, but you could have complications and not be a smoker. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
