nkthomas 1 Posted November 19, 2016 I had the Duodenal Switch surgery a few years ago and have struggled with getting my Iron supplement in. Because it has to be taken 2-4 hours before/after having Calcium, it takes a lot of planning to make sure they are not conflicting. Then a light bulb came on - we do not absorb nutrients and Vitamins from our food, which is why we have to take all the supplements. So does that mean I can take my Iron supplement and still eat cheese and other dairy products inside that 2-4 hour window? Sure would make life easier if we can. My main problem is I forget to take the iron at the time I'm able, and setting an alarm to remind me on my phone or other devices is not an option.
Dsrebeccachanger 5 Posted November 19, 2016 (edited) L I already have low Iron so I have been practicing a Vitamin supplement routine by pre-planning on Sundays. It has been easy to get my Iron in when I wake up, but get busy at lunch and forget the Calcium etc. It's a struggle for sure! I appreciate your feedback! Postop 411 Posted November 20, 2016 (edited) I've always only left 1 hour between eating (or other pills) and Iron. That's what was recommended to me by my DS team. Also, if you want to increase the absorption of your Iron, consider adding 1000mg. of Vit. C (tab or capsule) at the same time you take you iron.
