Currently pregnant and planning for a surgery after delivery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I was planning on getting the surgery done earlier this year but before i could start my research i found out that i was pregnant and i ignored my thoughts on surgery.

Now i am in my 8th month and will be delivering my baby in Jan. I would like to ask mothers in this forum for suggestions on the surgery post delivery, how long should i wait before contacting my PCP about my WLS.

How would it effect my breastfeeding?

Thanks in advance.

I had RNY in October when my daughter was 10 months old, and I think you can contact your PCP right away. It could take months to do all the pre op appointments (It took me 7 and I rushed them as much as possible), you may able to choose your own surgery time, for me I just wanted it asap but I recall them asking me what season/month I preferred.

My PCP did recommend waiting until I was done breastfeeding to get the surgery, I'm guessing because you won't be eating much starting with the pre op diet until 2-4 weeks after surgery, and breastfeeding would be difficult when you are almost starving. There will also be a limit on how much you can lift after surgery. My husband ended up taking a week off so he could pick up the baby for me, and afterwards I kept a stroller in the house so I at least could avoid carrying her around.

A plus to having this surgery after a baby is that people aren't questioning the weight loss very much.

Hi there, great question is I cannot find any information about this on the internet. My son is currently three and a half months old I have my surgery date for December 27th of this year! I needed to get my surgery in before the end of the year for insurance reasons comma and my surgeon was awesome that he kind of rushed me through. It does all depend on your insurance though. I did not need to do the three month medically supervised diet before surgery. I will have to stop breastfeeding my son on the first day of my 2-week liquid diet comma that is a diet before your surgery to shrink your liver. There's definitely some sadness around the fact that I won't be nursing him as long as I nurse my daughter comma but I had to weigh the risk and benefits for me. And this is it opportune time for me to have surgery because my husband will be off work to help with the kids. So do what's best for you if you know you want to have surgery soon I would start the process ASAP as it could take 7 to 8 months mine only took two, I am truly blessed period hope that helps I dictate my text please excuse any typos.

@@SweetyShetty1988 Great question, I would hope that you would need to wait to breast feed or not do it at all because of nutrional values. Just my opinion.

@@Alexis99 who do you have for insurance? I'm hoping to get my surgery before the end of this year. I saw my surgeon today and he said he can get me in before the end of this year. I'm going to request my letter of support/certification from my PCP on Monday and hope to get it back within a week.

Otherwise, it'll be around feb or march next year. Grr and another deductible I'll have to meet.

I have bcbs of ill, city of Chicago plan. I hope you can get it done this year. That's exactly why I wanted done now, my out of pocket expenses are met. The surgery and all these appointments are 100% covered. If you wait til next year...that's more nursing time with your baby:-) best of luck

Hi,

I was also in the same situation as you. I had scheduled my lap band surgery and then got pregnant! So, I decided to breastfeed baby for a year and then have my surgery. I'm very happy that I did and am happy with the results.

Good luck,

Heather

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
