Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Would I be able to make a deduction on my taxes for monies paid to a doctor out of the country? What would I need to show proof?? Letter from him and a receipt? Gosh, this would really help me out if it ends up I am eligable to do this!!!

We did..so have many others. IRS has no rule abut WHERE the surgery took place.

A caveat to this would be that you CAN deduct expenses for tummy tucks or skin removals following a WLS if...... the extra skin was causing pain/redness/soreness/blisters/other complications and the removal was necessary to the healthy well being of the individual and advised by a physician as a means to treat the ailments.

Just thought that I would let everyone know that you can also use money from an MSA, FSA or HSA(Health Savings Accounts) to pay for the surgery and surgery related expenses. I was self-pay and used $3,000 out of my HSA and then I will be able to continue contributing to is tax free for years to reimburse myself in the future.

Note - you can only do this if your account was open at the time of surgery or the services that you are paying for.
