Suggestion to prepare for surgery in January?

Hi, I just joined this site yesterday! I'm shooting for a surgery date sometime in the 2nd or 3rd week in January. I've been doing a lot of reading and watching you tube videos to help me learn what to expect. I wonder if y'all have any suggestion for what I should be doing NOW to prepare, if anything, for January?

Also, I'm 50 with 2 boys 10 & 12 yrs old. Anyone here with similar life circumstances?

Get a myfitnesspal account and a kitchen scale (if you don't already have them). Practice religiously logging everything you eat, good, bad, or ugly.

Walk every day.

If you are primarily responsible for shopping and/or food prep, start transitioning your family to a healthier way of eating for all of you.

Hi Dawn! I just joined too. My surgery will be either the 3rd or 4th week in January. I'm 50 years old. My surgeon recommended the Gastric Sleeve. Im focusing on drinking 1 Protein shake a day. I'm drinking Premier Protein. 30g of Protein per shake. I'm also working thru coping skills for emotional eating, compulsive eating. I got to this weight using food for comfort. That habit will not be changed by the surgery. I've learned that not dealing with the mental aspect is what causes some to gain weight back in the 18th to 24 month post op period. I'm drinking Water out of sports bottle caps to get used to sipping rather than gulping Water. I follow a YouTube channel called Voluptuously Skinny. This woman lives in Tulsa too. She video journaled her entire journey. She is hilarious and transparent. I also attend monthly support groups where we get to meet with post surgery patients and get their tips and ask questions. I hope we get more to respond to this thread. I'm like you. I want to be prepared.

Practice what you will need to do after your surgery. Don't drink 1/2 hour before you eat and 1/2 hour after you eat. Maybe start weighing out your food to get a feel of what you will do after don't buy too many Protein Drinks ahead because our taste seems to change afterward. You might want to get a book called WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY FOR DUMMIES. It has recipes for before, during and after your WLS. Good Luck on your journey. I look forward to following your posts.

I would recommend reading up on emotional eating because that (or the loss of that) was more emotional than I expected. I recommend Geneen Roth's books.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

      Woohoo! I have 7 more days till surgery, So far I am already down a total of 20lbs since I started this journey.
