I am 15 days out, surgery was 10/31. I am starting to feel hungry throughout the day. Protein Shakes are so gross to me now I can barely get a whole one down a day. They are too sweet and I have tried several different brands. I am worried that I am not getting enough. I am also worried that my hunger is back already and will throw a monkey wrench in the progress I have made and any future progress as well. Help! I have not been cleared for soft pureed foods yet but have tried an egg and some mashed potatoes. My stomach seems to do okay with them. I stop when I start to feel full and feel quite satisfied and the hunger goes away pretty much the rest of the day. Is this normal?

I had the same experience as far as feeling hungry and being done with shakes. I also dabbled in eggs and mashed potatoes. There are really no answers here. You have to weather the storm. Try to sip on broth to give you variety or maybe tea but you don't want to progress too much too fast. Be honest with your dr and nut so they can help you and give some suggestions if there are any. I'm 4 weeks out and I promise it gets better with time. Make sure you are taking your Pepcid and other meds because they help. Hang in there and don't forget to call your dr.

Thank you! I go for 3 week follow up on monday where they will graduate me to soft foods. I hope they won't be mad at me that I started a little early. I have been very careful not to over-do it. I just thought the hunger was supposed to stay away for a while. Maybe I will ask on Monday. I will admit I do not get in enough food during the day. I get plenty of fluids but just the sight of food, Protein shakes, Soups, even SF popsicles just the thought makes me sick. aside from the eggs and mashed potatoes i have not been satisfied for close to 5 weeks. and I can tell my tastes have changed already. I am doing well on liquid though. I am often too thirsty.

From what I know, the hunger feelings you think you are feeling right now is most likely just acid in your stomach. Drink Water or broth to make that better, but do make sure you are taking your PPI right now.

I got hot and sour Soup from the local Chinese place and strained out the veggies and drank the broth. It was like heaven! LOL

Ditch the mashed potatoes as soon as you can, and get on Protein forward (Ricotta bake, cottage cheese, some yogurts, mashed Beans, hummus). The sooner you get rid of the carbs, the less likely they will turn into cravings as you heel up. And brace yourself, because your brain will convince you of so many things once you start eating!

Be good, and go Protein forward, and don't even mess with carbs and simple sugars while you're trying to lose :)

Lol! I understand! Just be careful not to cause any leakage in those staples. I'm excited that you can graduate to soft foods soon. That was a game changer for me. Trust me .....even now I don't want to see ANYTHING on that approved liquid list! Lol. I'm at my 4 week well beginning of 4 weeks and I didn't lose since last week. But I can't get caught up in numbers. I just have to keep moving forward.

@@pammieanne Ricotta bake sounds DELICIOUS. do you have a recipe? and I LOVE hummus. am also looking forward to steaming veggies again. I have mashed cauliflower on my list as well as broccoli if they allow it. I eat it soft anyway under normal circumstances so maybe they will allow it. I am so looking forward to eating tuna also. How long was it before any of yall could have salad?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
