Pre-Surgery Diet Stall

Recommended Posts

I'm curious if anyone has any insight. I'm on a pre-op diet (High Protein, low-carb) that has been very successful up til now. My SW was 398 and I'm down around 360 now. I've been vacillating between 360 and 362 for a couple of weeks. My surgery is in two weeks, and my goal weight for surgery was 375 so I'm not terribly worried about regaining that much in two weeks if I keep with the diet.

The problem is I've hit a stall for the last two weeks and I can't seem to break past 360. I've increased my exercise and my Water intake is solid. I'm pretty much doing the same thing I did to lose the first 38 pounds, but the stall is lasting a while.

This may be a non-issue with my surgery 2 weeks away, but any ideas on breaking the stall. I was really hoping to be at 350 for the surgery and while that seems unlikely now, I'd really at least like to break 360.

This is a good question. I believe these stalls do eventually break, especially since it seems like you're doing everything right. I would keep doing what your doing and your metabolism will kick in shortly. I've been stalling at my same weight for 4 weeks and nothing has changed. I haven't had my surgery yet, but I think the weight is not moving because your body thinks it's in starvation mode. It's hanging on to everything your doing. So, keep at it and your weight should drop again.

How long have you been increasing your exercise?

How long have you been increasing your exercise?

For about 2 weeks now. I saw a slight improvement over the weekend (finally saw 359.8 on the scale). With the holidays coming up I'll have more time to do a full workout on my days off (Thurs-Sun), and be in good shape for my surgery on Wednesday.

I'm not really worried about it since I'm 15 pounds below my surgery goal weight, and the 350 is just an arbitrary number I set for myself. I think I was just freaking out a bit because it's my first stall since I started and was worried I was gonna balloon up prior to my surgery and risk not being allowed to go through with it. Since it's just over a week away, I'm calming down a little bit. Now to just get through Thanksgiving . . .

@@Alfred Day, ok good. How did you do on Thanksgiving? I had a few bad choices, so I'm going hard at exercising this week.

That is really normal so I wouldn't worry about it. I was on a 9 month low carb liquid diet a couple of years ago in an effort to lose the weight without surgery and the doctor told me that plateaus happen and you will normally break through them without doing anything. With surgery so close, I would just keep doing what you're doing and the weight loss will kick back in.

I did great because I stayed home and didn't do the family thing. Thanksgiving isn't my favorite food anyway, and by the time Christmas comes around I'll already have had the surgery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
