Soup/liquids question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

A quick note of thanks to all of you for the amount of insight, information and advice you all give. It's been incredibly useful. I've spent hours reading posts over the past few weeks.

I am on week 2 and I'm noticing that my energy is increasing and I'm finding it easier to get in the liquids and shakes - although the shakes take me hours from all that sipping.

My question relates to Soup. I have been getting fresh Soup (choosing runny versions with minimal bits), blending them and then straining. In week 1 I was doing the same but I was only managing perhaps 2 or 3 tbsp before feeling full, so I'd stop.

This week I am able to get through more runny soup (about 150g). It feels great, and I have so much more energy.

But I am reading and rereading my post surgery pack and I'm not sure I should be able to swallow this much so soon. I use small spoons and sip but I don't feel sick or full. Is this normal as in because it's runny soup and is a liquid, or (in my panicked mind) have I stretched my pouch already.

When I have sf jelly (Jello for the US peeps - I'm from the UK), I can only manage maybe a teaspoon or 2 at most so I know the pouch is there!

I am not sure if I'm worrying unnecessarily but I am cautious not to make mistakes. I have my post surgery follow up in another 2 weeks time.

Many thanks x

Your swelling is probably going down so liquids go down easier. I wasn't given quantities of Soup so I would continue with having what you can. However, don't do so at the risk of not meeting Protein and Water goals.

That should be first priority always.

@@tapgirl I am about the same as you and I am having the same experience. It takes me like hours in the morning to get a Protein shake down, and hours to do a second one in the evening. My doctor wants me getting 60-70 grams of Protein and I am hitting that. I am also hitting my Water goals. I enjoy a little Jello (I can do about 2 oz), some Soup, or some yogurt each day as well. All go down easily. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as we are not eating too fast or feeling discomfort.

As others have said all of this stuff is basically liquid. I have a feeling when we start on real solid food it won't take as much to fill us up.

In the begining, I would walk while drinking the Protein shake. I walked in the mall and sip. I found it easier to sip while walking . When at home, I found it easier to sip while cleaning or cooking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
