What do you do when you are exhausted?

Recommended Posts

I only recently started making moving my body a daily priority. Nothing too strenuous. I would say that four to five days out of seven I meet my personal goals for exercise.

But sometimes, life becomes strenuous. There are times that I feel so exhausted, but I feel like I can barely stay awake let alone walk a couple of miles.

What do you do when you're too tired to move?

Eat when you're hungry, rest when you're tired...learning to pay attention to r body and responding appropriately. It's all part of the journey. Be kind d to yourself, maybe for the first time in years.

If you are past the surgery recovery period and find that you're exhausted or sleeping way the day see your Dr to see if it's physical. You might be anemic or low on Viet D...If it's it physical get a depression screening. Big changes, even changes for the good, can be very stressful.

My WLS team said that if you're tired all the time it may be because you're not getting enough carbs. Carbs are what fuel your brain, organs, and muscles, and if they do not get enough, you will feel tired/fatigued. They recommended that I get anywhere from 30-50 carbs per day. Maybe on the days you exercise try eating your max limit on carbs. It doesn't have to be a lot. Check with your nutritionist and see what he/she has to say.

It might be that you increased your exercise load too fast. If that could be the case, step back a little bit and increase time and intensity at a slower pace.

It might also be that you're not eating enough calories and/or carbs to fuel your workouts. If you think that's the case, play around a little with your energy intake. When I'm not eating enough, the three hills I have to climb when biking to work become mountains all of a sudden and recovery time between workouts is also increased.

It might be that on some days you're simply just too tired. I'm usually too tired/exhausted after a horrible night being on-call, followed by a normal working day and I simply do just a bit of light yoga to relax then and go to bed early.

I simply ensure that I'm getting 80+ grams of Protein per day, 4-6 hours of sleep per day and move as much as possible during the course of each day with the exception of planned down days (weekends) where I actively rest and recover.

And then there is coffee.....blessed coffee.< /p>

How far out of surgery are you?

I listen to my body and rest, sleep, relax and then rest some more.

Hope you feel better soon!

Picking the right time of day for your best energy level helps too.

I like first thing in the AM, because end of day I am mentally tired from work, and too much going on.

Everyone is different, but it will get better as you get used to it and get in better shape.

Just go slow to what your body says is OK, and enjoy it.

Thank you all so much for your replies. It's very helpful to know that it is normal. I am a year postop so I really don't have any problem getting in enough calories. But I do sometimes exhaust myself mentally, and my work can be very taxing. Sometimes I think I just need extra rest depending on my stress levels.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
