family that won't stop eating badly ?

Recommended Posts

How do you guys deal with your family still eating fast food and all the crappy food in front of you ? i'm a little over 2 weeks post op, and it's been like this since day one ! the day my mother picked me up from the hospital she went to mcdonalds right after to get everyone in the car food!!!

now my mother wants me to go out and get her and the family mcdonald's, because she can't drive at night ! i think it's ridiculous! and then they wonder why i've been so nasty since i had the surgery ! maybe because the food that got me into this problem is still smacking me in my face ! i just can't believe they don't see anything wrong with it. i try to tell them that their eating the wrong way and they should watch what they eat. my mother is on a diet for a couple months. but it's not the right way, she thinks getting 2 bacon ranch salads with 2 extra grilled chicken from mcdonald's is healthy ! i just can't handle this anymore !

I understand you..we can't make others follow our path...I have 4 children thin as could be so I don't limit their eating..we stopped fast food when I started this journey.but I cook most of their meals so they try what I cook..they get their favorite like a big Breakfast nachoes (switched to low fat products and lean turkey) I can't eat it yet since I'm 5 days post op but be strong..this too shall pass.☺

The minute I went back to cooking for my family this was much easier. Fast food or pizza is a treat they can enjoy if I am out of town or working when they have a meal. That way I don't have to interact with it. Plan out family meals. The organization will help prevent a discussion about fast options.

i'm not against them eating , but not for nothing. i cook great dinners ! tonight i made that ricotta bake that people have posted ! my son ate it, but my mother and boyfriend refused to even try it. i don't object to them eating fast food, but i asked them nicely not to eat it in front of me. mcdonald's was always my weakness and being so fresh out of surgery , it bothers me. i think i'm more upset about the fact that their so inconsiderate about it. they literally tease me with food.

Girl i know exactly what your talking about. My mom did the same thing right after the hospital my mom went to my favorite pizza spot, the the next day got burgers. And right now she wanted to go get Starbucks but i told her no lol. Its a little annoying but you have to keep that healthy mind set. Well thats what im trying to do.

It is inconsiderate of them and you have a right to ask them not to eat it in front of you. Ask them to stay in the car and eat their fast food. If your mother doesn't drive at night tell her she is welcome to eat what you made for the family or get something out of the freezer/cabinets and cook it. Be strong.

This is going to sound harsh, but I don't mean it to be. You had surgery, they didn't. You have to learn to control your food choices, not theirs. They are not ready to change their lifestyle and probably don't appreciate you telling them what and how to eat, the same way you probably didn't like to be told that you were eating crap prior to making your lifestyle change. People have to make those changes on their own terms.

However, there is another issue here. I feel that your boyfriend and mom are being unsupportive if they aren't even trying to be mindful of what they eat in front of you. I don't know your relationship, but if my boyfriend (we've been together 6 years and live together) did that to me so soon after surgery, we would be done. It's disrespectful and shows that he isn't invested in your success. He doesn't have to eat well, but should at least be able to not eat crap in front of you for a few weeks while you adjust.

Some families will accommodate a member who's had surgery, but, frankly, it's a waste of time and unreasonable to get grumpy when they won't. We each make our own choices and are responsible for ourselves. Also consider that, as you tell it, you grew up in a household where decent, quality food was generally unknown.

If your group really is saying things like, "Mmmm, don't you wish you could eat this, Marissa? It's soooo good," they are doodyheads and you may want to tell them that the swill in the trough is all theirs.

You chose surgery because you have a goal. That's your focus. Pffft to the rest of 'em and their choices.

It sounds like your family is being completely rude and insensitive! Sorry you have to deal with that.

I'm a vegan and gave up fast food years ago. To make it easier I looked up every disgusting fact about the food in these places. I'm thinking pink slime, E. coli contaminations, and general unsanitary conditions in the processing. Perhaps doing some of this research for yourself and getting the specific facts that you can share with them will make them not want it. At the very least it might make it less appealing to you.

Good luck and I hope your family stops being so unsupportive.

When I read these stories I feel sad for the people having to deal with this issue and it reinforces how happy I am to live alone. My friends are big buffet eaters and they are starting to ask me how can I live on so little food after my December 1st surgery. I just tell them I'm changing my lifestyle for myself and I'm happy with my choice and that getting together will no longer about food for me.

I am fortunate that I'm a single mom. My kids eat what I buy. I know people at work will do this to me but thank goodness I won't have to put up with that at home

It really is hard to see and smell food you love and not be able to have any of it. My family PROMISED to eat healthy along with me after my surgery, but they never did. Not at all. The first time we went shopping for groceries after my bypass, I had a list and meal plans, all low carb and healthy, and my husband started an argument in the store because he was unhappy with the menu!! Then he argued and got angry because there weren't any baked goodies on the list! I had to Make a quick change to my grocery list and add a dozen donuts and a boston cream cake to the cart. I was livid. It's been just like that for the last 11 months. And it is a struggle for me daily. And sometimes I lose. I don't dump. I don't have issues with any food. So controlling my diet is sheer willpower. It would be a helluva lot easier to do this without temptation always in my face. I'm winning, but I'm struggling more than I should have to. I wish you the best, and I hope your family can open their eyes and realize you need their help in this.

I had a similar problem. My housemates are all very overweight and eat a lot more rubbish than I ever did. I happen to always have loved fresh home cooked - they love takeaway in every shape and form. My biggest weakness has always been sugar which is brought into the house frequently.

When I had the surgery there was a lot or resentment, as if they didn't want me to succeed in weight loss because it would make them look bad. I still get it at times.

Basically I have started leaving the room whenever they eat or whenever I get negative comments about not eating enough and getting too skinny.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
