Stopping hormones 1 month before surgery

Recommended Posts

I had a hysterectomy last year and take hormones because of that. I get extremely depressed without the hormones and I have a history of severe depression. So I never even thought about it but was surprised to find that I had to stop taking my hormones 1 month prior to surgery, I found out 1 day before I had to stop taking them when I was reading over my packet from the surgeon again. So I reluctantly stopped taking them. My surgery is Dec 5 but my depression is already growing worse by the day, I'm not sure what to do

I had to stop my HRT Patches 6 weeks before the surgery and not use them for 6 weeks after.

My husband was SO glad when I finally slapped that patch on lol. Bless him :P

See if you can take anything else for the short term, im sure your GP will be able to help you.

Best of luck !

I told my male surgeon I couldn't come off continuous bcp and he said I had to or would risk blood clots. His female NP (who has had surgery) said I'd be fine. I went with her opinion, as I am in severe endometriosis pain when I stop bcp.

Maybe weigh your options with your PCP?

Male surgeon?

Talk with the surgeon and evaluate your actual risk. I would not stop hormone therapy without a fight.

If you have to manage without them for two months to get the long term results you are looking for then I think you can do it. Maybe schedule with a therapist to strategize coping skills to get through it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
