Keto/Ketogenic Diet for Gastric Bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I came here to ask simply if anyone here has had Gastric Bypass and is following a true ketogenic (LCHF) diet?

I will be 7 week post-op on Tuesday and have been doing a lot of research on the types of foods I should be eating from here on out. I'm starting to notice the basic low carb isn't keeping me as satissfied and away from cravings as what I've read a Keto diet would do. I have tried it in the past (before RNY) and had great success but I know that things are very different now and some people experience pouchs that don't tolerate fats very well.

Does anyone here successfully follow this diet?

I eat high Protein (80 to 100) and low carb. I'm banded and find high high fat goes right through. I suggest you gradually increase your fat as you transition to full Keto.< /p>

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.
After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that normally process fats and sugars has been cut away and consuming high amounts of these two food types can lead to dumping syndrome. After about a year, your intestines will figure out something is wrong and step in and fill the gap. This will allow you to consume fats and sugars again. But it is best to follow the plan guidelines for food types and meal volume during the Weight Loss phase. You will transition into the Maintenance phase soon enough and you want to maximize your weight loss during the Weight Loss phase.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
