What to take to hospital

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery on 8th. Robe, slippers, pillow and soft blanket, cell phone charger, toiletries and something comfortable to wear home. The pillow and blanket saved me lol. Felt more comfy

Phone , charger, lip balm, change of underwear.

As soon as I got there I was in their gown and socks. Stayed in that until DC the next day. I went home in the same sweats.

I was very comfy in their bed and they gave me a cold pack for my stomach which was great.

Mostly you will be walking and sleeping.

Oh and a toothbrush and toothpaste! My mouth was so unbelievably dry!

I packed a suitcase, and the only things I used were:

change of undies

toothbrush/toothpaste

phone & charger

lip balm

Everything else was wasted effort. They wanted me wearing their non-slip socks, I used another gown backwards as a robe, and I wasn't focused enough to read anything, I just watched TV and played on my phone. I slept more than anything else. I didn't need my own Protein mixes, they had Premier Protein there.

I do wish I'd taken a heating pad.

For the most part, the hospital will have everything you need except your clothes, phone and charger. They even have toiletries if needed.

Don't stress too much. :)

Genn, thank you so much for your advice. I'm having gastric bypass surgery in December in Mexico. I would appreciate any other suggestions you might have.

in not sure about Mexico but I would definitely take all meds u are on with you and also what Vitamins u plan on using to have them okayed since ur having it done there. Most hospitals have the basics I would assume. But I would take my own hygiene products. Slippers. Change of underwear and take one extra outfit since ur not familiar with the hospital or what they offer. And then the others I listed like I said while in the hospital you will sleep most of the time. When ur up u will drink walk take meds drink sleep sleep drink walk drink sleep drink u get the point lol. Just remember to follow the prescribed diet and make sure you know what that diet recommendation is. When u move to the next phase. Ect. All surgeons are different and have different diets but seems like a lot of people come back from Mexico not sure of the post op diet. Lots of luck and best wishes.

I previously saw and wrote down the following (which I haven't seen in any of the posts so far): comfy front-clasping bra, extension cord for frequently mentioned chargers.

I packed a bag and didn't use any of the stuff. I was so out of it and the hospital pretty much gives you stuff you need. The only thing I really recommend is your phone and charger. I wore pajamas home. There was no way I was going to try to put clothes on.

The only items that I used were...

Phone and charger

shampoo/conditioner - I used Shampoo for body wash

My blanket from home

I never wore a robe, the gowns were huge and wrapped around me

I used their non skid socks

I was drugged and very sick so I didn't do much of anything

I just had my surgery on Halloween. I packed a bag but hardly used anything I brought. I used my hair brush. Phone charger. I brought a scrunchie and face wash so I could wash my face. I stayed 2 nights. I wore a hospital gown and another one over it going to other way so I could walk without my butt hanging out. I wore their slipper socks. I used their lip balm. I didn't shower. I did use my own toothpaste and toothbrush but they do provide them.

I went to the hospital with comfy yoga pants, a front hook bra, undies, and slip on shoes. I wore the same thing home but with clean undies.

I brought my heating pad but didn't need it. I was on morphine, no pain at all, I slept a lot. I bought Gas X strips and still haven't opened the box.

I kept the tv on all the time and texted/played on my phone when I felt up to it. Mostly all I did was sleep and walk and pee.

I'm so excited... found out today from surgery coordinator that Cigna approved me after 5 days of being submitted. So excited about this but now I'm nervous. Glad to have an idea of what I need take to the hospital.

Bathrobe. You'll enjoy walking more if your not trying to cover your butt in a hospital gown.

I'm taking a light zip front night gown in case they want to see my stitches. It's always too hot in the hospital for me. Extension. Cord, cell phone, clean undies for me to ride home with and a tiny fan I can put on the side cabinet just for that reason

I understand they provide the toiletries at my hospital.

If you're picky on flavors (I am) you can bring a favorite herbal tea bags or crystal light.

I sleep with a cpap and mouth guard (for teeth grinding) so I'll be bringing those.

Otherwise, just clean underwear, phone and charger. I'll make sure to download some non-fiction audio books onto my phone to listen to as I doze.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
