Runny nose, have you experienced this?

Recommended Posts

I just had my bypass surgery on 11/8 -- today is 11/11 and I am noticing whenever I try to drink my Protein shake that my nose starts running.

I have read this and hiccups were common warning signs that your pouch was full, But I didn't think it would be this bad.

How long does this normally last?

Thanks,

There are many pre-triggers to dumping syndrome including the formation of excess mucous, hiccups, sneezing, the change in the way food taste. These are signals that your stomach is full and one more bite and you will be in full scale dumping syndrome which can manifest as stomach pains, nausea and vomiting and several other symptoms.

But being only 3 days post-op I suspect that this is not your problem. The pre-triggers seemed like they appeared after I transitioned into the solid food stage. It might be a cold. After I had my RNY surgery, I became lactose intolerant. So when I drank milk, it lead quickly to stomach pains and a quick trip to the bathroom with diarrhea. This condition lasted for around 2 months and then disappeared. Some Protein shakes contain lactose, and sometimes Protein shake powder is blended with milk, so if you have these symptoms, you might forego anything with lactose for awhile.

The vagus nerve tells your brain that your stomach is full. During surgery it is often cut or compressed. When the vagus nerve is cut you often never feel hunger again. I have not felt hunger in over nine years.

When your new stomach is full you get a runny nose, sneezing, or hiccups. Your new stomach is swollen and can hold very little. The runny nose just means to stop putting anything into it.

As the swelling goes down, you can eat or drink more at a time. I stocked up on lots of broth and ended up that one can lasted more than a week.

I pictured my old stomach as a two-liter bottle of soda and my new stomach as the cap on that bottle and aimed for enough at one time to fill a soda bottle cap.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
