First Day Trip - Need suggestions for care

Recommended Posts

I tried searching for this info first, but I couldn't make my search terms specific enough.

Tomorrow, I'll be two weeks and 5 days post-op from a duodenal switch. My 72 year old aunt has asked me to drive 3.5 hours to another city to visit her while she's in town doing demonstrations at a renaissance festival. I agreed to do so in July, before my surgery happened, and I hadn't thought about it again until tonight when she messaged me. I'm now extremely nervous about taking care of myself while driving 7 hours and spending probably half a day or more at the festival.

I'm not sure if the festival allows outside food and drink, but my guess is no. I'm sure I can find plenty of Water, but I don't know what to do about food. I am on soft foods, btw. I can eat before I go, and I can pack a snack or two to eat on the way down and when I get there, but I need suggestions for while I'm on the grounds. I'm not eating meat yet (that's not canned, at least), so no turkey legs. I could eat the cheese off pizza, but I'm worried it'll make me blow up a Porta john. I'm probably going to sneak in a packet of apple sauce and a packet of tuna (which I haven't eaten yet, because I'm afraid it'll be too dry). Any suggestions for food I may be able to eat at the festival (it's a massive festival)? I'm thinking after I leave the festival, I can stop at taco bell for Beans or something (something else I haven't tried. No eating out at all since surgery). I am not planning on taking any Protein powder with me, but maybe I should and mix it with some ice Water after the festival?

This is stressful! I appreciate whatever advice y'all can provide!

You can try the Protein powder w. Water. Maybe as a last resort. I find that kind of gross but it might tide you over. If you have a backpack or fanny pack I would plan to bring some foods with you. Pack and plan to be away all day and take in what you can. They can question you if you want but you have a medical reason to bring in your own food. Keep your eye out for soft stuff you can eat-- Soups, etc but you'll have to basically depend on your food stores. Take a cold pack to keep your cheese, etc cold at the bottom of the bag. At least you'll have something to snack on until you're off of the grounds and back at your car where you have food you can eat. Make some egg salad or tuna salad and stick it in a ziplock and keep it cool with an icepak or in a cooler in the car.

Also see if you'd be able to leave and come back. You could go to your car and have something to eat and go back. At 2 weeks out though I don't think you'll be all that hungry, but I know very little about the duodenal switch only that the sleeve is part 1 of it and based on how I felt at 2 weeks out, some Snacks should be okay.

I LIVED on pintos and cheese from taco bell during the fist few weeks. Even now I will go through there for some Beans and cheese.

Went to carowinds theme park shortly after mine 2weeks I think rny. I had my powder and Water separate they let me take it in. Guy said it was not any different than someone bringing baby formula or baby food.

I went to the Renaissance festival in NC last weekend - they have bread bowls with chili, broccoli cheese, spinach dip, and some others. I ate broccoli cheese without the bread bowl and was just fine. They had Water and tea not just soda so I could drink too.

I would tell them that you just had surgery and that you are on a medically mandated diet that does not allow for consumption of the types of food provided at their event without significant risk to your health. That you will be bringing your doctor prescribed foods with you and if they have any questions they can contact your lawyer.

Risk, prescribed and lawyer tend to get them to back off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
