Acid reflux/heartburn

Recommended Posts

Wow I am 3 days post op and the reflux is unreal. Dr said surgery went off without a hitch and everything was fine... it's so hard to take anything in when I feel so shitty. I have never ever experienced heart burn in my life before this is awful.

Is this quite normal? They gave me prisolec I think it's called to take everyday for 3 months but wow I don't even know if it's working.

Any suggestions? TIA

Let your doctor know, they may need to up your dose. I didn't get a PPI. I also had wicked acid reflux, but my prevacid prescription has totally elliminated it. I had to call my doc and ask for the prescription.

I would definately call the doctor because reflux is supposed to be cured with RNY. I had very severe gerd prior to my surgery and have not had a single episode of even light heartburn since.

they did keep me on a PPI for the first 30 though because there is some stomach acid for a short periiod of time.

i would call....Lastly are you drinking all your fluids? Sometimes dehydration can feel like heartburn and hunger.

I am really suckling at getting all the fluids in. Doing better today. But it's extremely hard .

I never had reflux or experienced heart burn before surgery.

Thank you they sent me home with a 3 month prescription for something that starts with p. It has helped but not 100% I wonder if it's because I am not drinking enough but it seems to only bother me when I have sips. This is crazy lol. I managed some tomatoes Soup today 1/4 cup and it went down well.

I had to take Carafate for the first several months. It helped with acid re flux and healing of the esophagus.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
