MommyB23 4 Posted November 9, 2016 I plan to have gastric bypass. No surgery date yet. Just got financially approved. Got my TSH for the surgery and it was "off" . Primary Doctor called and wants me to come in tomorrow to discuss it and possibly start a new medication. I've never had a problem with this before and I'm afraid its going to hold up surgery. Has anyone dealt with this preop? Sent from my Z988 using the BariatricPal App
shedo82773 1,236 Posted November 9, 2016 I have been on Thyroid meds for many years, it didn't bother my WLS. You might need to adjust your medication after your surgery, but they will keep an eye on it. I would say no worries. But then I'm not your Dr. Good Luck
ladylidia 19 Posted November 10, 2016 I had my surgery Sept 2016 prior to that I had my thyroid removed and my TSH level was 67 and they want it at zero my surgeon would not do the surgery until TSH was under 3 he said I would not lose weight if it was higher day of surgery it was 1.4 about 2 weeks ago I had a gain of .5lbs they checked my TSH it was back to 8 Dr raised my meds it came back down and I lost 7lbs the next week so work with your Dr to get it down and take the meds on empty stomach at least an hour before any food or other meds Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
Djmohr 6,965 Posted November 10, 2016 I have been dealing with thyroid issues since i was 21 years old. I have hypothyroidism. I would not worry too much about it impacting the actual surgery. Just go to the doctor and get on the right meds. If your thyroid is slow like mine as soon as the weight starts coming off your levels will flucuate and you will need to work closely with your doctor to regulate. I am currently 2 years post op and still trying to regulate the right dose. It has come down alot and now i am taking one dose one day and another dose the next day. I think it is finally working but have to go get levels checked again. It will be ok, i think. Just follow through with your doctors.
kimberb 323 Posted November 10, 2016 I am experiencing the exact thing. I have an underactive thyroid. 9/1 my TSH was 4.04. Kaiser wants you to be around 4. I had my thyroid checked 9/1 and it is now up to 5.96. My PCP felt fine with me having surgery at this level. Surgeon wants it around 4.0 so my PCP has upped my thyroid medication. I've reached and passed my surgery goal weight of 227 (as of today 222.7) got clearance from Nutritionist and am hoping psychologist clears me on the 17th. I was told that it takes 3 months for thyroid medication to work. I sure hope I don't have to wait that long to get my surgery. I plan on contacting surgeon after I talk to psychologist on the 17th. I hope your thyroid doesn't slow the process down for you. Good luck Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App
