Is it normal to have such bitter taste after brushing in the morning? I know of course before the surgery after you may have off taste buds after brushing but I'm experiencing a super bitter aftertastes lasting a good while.

Your taste will most definitely change. For me, soda no longer tastes as good as it did before I had my WLS. I didn't drink the soda because I wanted it. I drank it to taste it and see if my taste had changed; and it did. I also don't care much for most sweets anymore. Now things taste TOO sweet and I don't like that. food in general just isn't what it used to be. Now, I can only take a few bites of something, and I usually get sick of it pretty quickly. I really wish there were a place that served extremely small portions of different things so I could have a variety, lol.

My wife has been complaining that she tastes like she has morning breath after brushing every day.

I haven't noticed it on her, and I haven't noticed it on myself.

At first I thought I had no tastebuds change. I was prepared for it because I kept reading it in these threads but now as the weeks go by, everything is far too sweet to me and just the idea makes me nauseous... Even things that aren't sweet. That's what is wierd.

Definite change in tastes. My toothpaste doesn't taste any different, but I don't like anything 'sweet'. Paste, no gel. And I have to brush bent over the sink because if I even swallow a drop of toothpaste my sleeve revolts. Retching for a good minute or so.

I bought some honey roasted peanuts the other day and was mad because they taste funny. Everything is too sweet or too salty or just tastes weird. chocolate tastes like chalk to me, except during PMS, when it is delicious. How weird.

If you are tasting metallic overtones, it is most likely caused by ketosis.

Your body stores approximately 300g of glucose in the muscles, and all excess glucose is converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. When you cut carbs, these stores of glycogen (stored glucose) deplete and your body turns to body fat as a source of fuel. Your liver continues to produce glucose for bodily functions.

Initially, your body isn't very good at using fat for fuel. Byproducts of burnt fat, known as ketone. Loses, are used for fuel as well while you are in ketosis. There are 3 kinds of ketones, one of which is acetone and excreted through your breath. It is normal to notice a change of your breath smell when this process starts.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
