I am 5 days post op and I finally been able to figure out what this horrible pain I have been experiencing in my upper chest that occurs when I am sleeping or when I wake up. It seems to be GERD. What a terrible feeling it is.

Did anybody try anything over the counter to help with the burning feeling? I woke up this morning in so much pain, I didn't know if it was gas pain or what.

I am 6 days post op and have similar issues. My dr told my to make sure I'm not lying flat. So I've been sleeping on the couch making sure I'm well propped up. She also has me on prilosec for Gerd. Talk to your doc. I'm sure he/she can prescribe something.

Hi. I struggled with gerd and am now at week 5, it is slowly coming right but I imagine it is something you will need to monitor for a long time. The following has helped me:

• use a Proton Pump Inhibitor (ppi) like omeprazole or similar every day (this should have been prescribed to you so ask your dr if you haven't already got this). I use mine every morning first thing and wait 30 mins before attempting to eat.

• invest in a tri pillow and sleep propped up (it's not fun but sleeping semi upright does really help)

• do NOT eat for 3 hours prior to going to bed

• if you need to take muscle relaxants be aware that these can be contributing to the Gerd as they relax the esophageal valve that is supposed to stop food/acid flowing and you may want to discuss this with your dr

• when you do move thru different food stages be aware that things will have changed. This might not be forever but the worst gerd I experienced was when I used spaghetti sauce (tomato paste & garlic) and now I avoid Tomato like the plague. Mint is also something I now have to avoid.

• Finally, as soon as you can introduce a quality probiotic into your diet to minimise gas/reflux

Hope some of this helps. Gerd is absolutely horrible and when you are already exhausted and trying to recover it can be really upsetting. Mine seems to be lessening (touch wood) so hopefully over time yours will too. Good luck

I am so sorry. It is tough. I had it for years before i had hiatal hernia surgery and it gave me Barrett's Esophagus which is precancerous. Luckily they fixed my large hernia and i have had none since surgery. But my doc still wants me on antacid to prevent acid erosion of my staple line.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
