Pregnancy/fertility/kids

Recommended Posts

So I am looking to start my journey and have a few questions about fertility, pregnancy and kids.

My wife and I will begin in vitro fertilization at the beginning of the year. How does the Sleeve wls impact sperm count and quality ?

I was thinking of having the surgery while she was pregnant. Is this a bad idea? Would a pregnancy and my wls be too much to handle at once? I would not want to take away from her experience or not be able to do something for her because of the surgery.

If both of the ideas above are not very good, what about wls with a new born?

As mentioned before, I would prefer to get the surgery before or right as she becomes pregnant but I am concerned sperm count and quality will be impacted. In vitro is very expensive and may require multiple attempts so I do not want to jeopardize her not being able to be pregnant because of the wls.

I understand most may not be doctors here but any input from what you have learned through the journey would be greatly appreciated.

Many individuals that have weight loss surgery experience better sex after surgery. This may not have anything to do with sperm count but more to do with the ability to achieve erection. One of the reasons why this is the case is because many of us have health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, severe acid reflux. These health issues are cause by a large part due to our obesity. Thus when we lose weight our health issues go into remission. So because we put our medical conditions to bed and also stop taking many of the medicines (which can also affect our sex lives), this element of our lives sees an improvement. Many women who have weight loss surgery become more fertile.

I was thinking of having the surgery while she was pregnant. Is this a bad idea? You will be laid up for a couple weeks. Other than that I would think it is doable.

Yay! Good for you for taking this step to be around for your kids!!!!

I have no idea about the sperm count issue that's something a medical professional is best to advise you on.

You are being very considerate regarding your wife and her pregnancy experience, again yay you! I would suggest waiting till the first trimester is over so she has the worst of it in the past that when women usually struggle the most. Plus then you will know if she's on her way to a healthy pregnancy. Perhaps do the pre op stuff and be ready to "go" with the surgery when she's early in the second trimester... able to care for you in the early post op period without feeling like a whale, LOL!

Anyhow good luck to you ! I think it's a wonderful thing to want to be around for your wife and kid... and considerate to plan around her needs as well!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
