Has anyone else been given these same rules?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

My name is Susan.

I was banded on August 28th.

So far I have lost 26 lbs.(I lost 18 two weeks before surgery)

I have followed my Surgeon's instructions exactly

He put me on a liquid diet two weeks before surgery.

liquids only for the first two days after surgery

pureed and Soft foods the first week after surgery

I had my followup appt. on Sept 7th, and He told me I could try to eat all foods. He said, If I begin to be able to eat a full size meal, call him and he will tighten the band.

I have not had any problems at all so far. I feel great! I have a very little appetite though, so I make sure I drink Protein Shakes to get that Protein in.

Has anyone else out there been put on solid foods within 10 days of surgery? Do I listen to my surgeon or you guys? After reading so many posts about damaging their bands by eating solids too soons, I'm so confused! My surgeon is an excellent surgeon who has done over 600 gastric bypass operations..but only about 37 lap band surgeries.

Opinions please : )

There are so many different regulations on this. Every doctor is different. I was banded by Franco favretti, the Italian doctor that fitted the second lap band ever done worldwide. He now teaches other docs worldwide in banding and continues to develop the best way to avoid complications. I am so impressed by him and I felt honored to be one of the few patients lucky enough to secure a appt with him.

That said my advice was:

7 day pre-op diet to shrink the liver (protein shakes and sensible dinn)

post op:

3 weeks of liquids

3 weeks of purees

then progression into solids.

First fill at 8 weeks

Then 3 days of liquids/puree of liquids after a fill.

Now that is very conservative compared to what alot of doctor's say but the patients at the clinic I go through have a very very low rate of problems with their bands IF they follow the program. It's hard and it sucks and I wish sometimes my doc was as easy going as alot of docs but after spending nearly 15k self pay on this the last thing I want to do is screw it up because I've been too hasty or anxious to do what *I* wanted.

My advice would be listen to your doctor but educate yourself, its better to be more cautious in the beginning while you're healing then to regret it later on and end up in surgery again or doing harm to yourself. If his speciality is gastric bypass over the lapband then it may be why he's so lax. Their rules are very different to ours.

Best wishes to you in your journey and please don't think I'm trying to say any other doctor's but mine are wrong because I'm not...only that it is better to go with caution sometimes rather than over confidence.

I would say that you should listen to your surgeon, he should know best. My surgeon put me on a pre-op diet of just liqiuds and 2 days before surgery just Clear Liquids. 2 weeks after nothing but liquids. 2 weeks after that it is just pureed food. Then I can start to introduce food little by little and then on the 6th week I am to receive my first fill.

-Teresa

Maybe you should call your surgeon to make sure what it is he said or maybe talk to his associate they really should know best. My surgeon put me on a pre-op diet for 2 weeks of just liqiuds and 2 days before surgery just clear liquids. 2 weeks after nothing but liquids. 2 weeks after that it is just pureed food. Then I can start to introduce food little by little and then on the 6th week I am to receive my first fill

I was on food 8 days out of surgery. Because I was very hungry. I called the drs. office and they told me that it happens to some as it did to me. I go for my first fill on sept 24th. I stopped loosing weight when I started eating. I am working real hard not to gain any weight. Dr said that may happen also--not to worry and not to weigh my self either. He doesn't want any more worried callls form me---lol. I think everyone is different. I can not even feel the band. Maybe a little in the a.m. It is just a wait and see thing right now. hope all goes well for you Janice

Hi Susan

I thought we had the same doc when I first read your post. My rules were pretty much the same as yours.

i was on liquids for 10 days before surgery...

and ever since i had the surgery 10 days ago...

i have my first post op appt. day after tomorrow & he

told me i would be on soft foods then for about a week...

then i can slowly introduce the allowed regular foods.

it sounds reasonable to me and i feel great and have lost

31# so i follow his advice.

I called my surgeon's office to make sure I heard him right, and indeed he said, I could start on solid foods immediately. (ten days after surgery). So far I have lost 15 lbs. (three weeks since surgery) (18 more pounds while being on the two weeks pre-surgery liquid diet)(Total of 33 lbs). Dr. Kolenich said that my band has no fill in it, BUT I feel full most of the time. I have a very small appetite now, and can only eat about 1/2 cup serving of anything at one time. He said it was because, sometimes the the band jusy being on the stoma (top of the stomach) causes a full feeling in some people without having to have it filled. That is what I feel. I have had no problems whatsoever..so far. I hope that continues. I have followed his rules very strictly. I take my Vitamins, and I began an exersize program..I don't drink with meals, and I make sure I get enough Protein each day.

I love the fact that I can eat anything and am not restricted. I am doing all I can to try to make it work, without having a fill. I'm very careful now of what I put into my body..no junk food!!

I'm not sure how to make a ticker.. But I started out @ 275lbs, and am now at 242 lbs. My goal is 150!

Just wanted to share my journey with others.. any questions feel free to email me. netgirly@yahoo.com "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me." Phil 4:13 Susan

Hi,

My dr is a very good dr. He has done over 500 lapbands and is a mentored by the top lapband dr in the world (some dr from australia, I forget his name).

Anyway, i start on solid foods on day 15.

week 1 post op is liquid

week 2 post op is mushies

week 3 post op is anything that is tolerated, full food.

I know a lot of dr's are different, so it is just important for you to follow YOUR dr's instructions.

Good luck!!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
