Getting nervous and have a few questions...

Recommended Posts

I'm going in 11/09/2016 .. I'm a little nervous. I've heard such mixed reviews about the surgery . I just found this group and I have so many questions. Like My doctor wants you to do a 7-10 day liquid diet before the surgery which I am currently really struggling with . Anyone have to do this? Also regarding the hospital stay my surgeon asked me if I was interested in going home same day. I was ecstatic and said YES!! but now after talking to a few people they all say I should really stay overnight .. Did anyone else go home same day?

lucky. I had to do a 14day liquid diet and based on what i've seen on here the vast majority do have to do it. It is to shrink your liver, so I suggest you stick with it. It is a struggle but you do get used to it.

I didn't go home same day. I had to stay for 2 nights (just the practice for a revision). at the clinic I go to sleevers stay 1 night.

I'm grateful for the night in the clinic because I had nurses there to ask questions of and help walk or go to the bathroom. a lot of people have nausea so it is good to be able to get medication etc for that. The negative about the clinic I was at was no single rooms and my roommate snored so I would have killed to go home for night two.

I stayed two nights -- standard for my surgeon -- but if I could have gone home same day I would have. I barely got any sleep what with all the people hassling me for blood samples and checking my incisions and making sure my compression booties were on, the cold hospital, unfamiliar bed, noisy surroundings . . . if I could have gone home and crawled into my own bed I would have been delighted to do it.

The liquid diet is no picnic but helps you wrap your head around no solids after surgery. I would have totally gone home the same day if possible. I was very lucky and had no nausea and no trouble getting fluids in. I got very little sleep the night in the hospital and I was when I did I was dreaming of my own bed.

I had seven days of liquid diet and it was hard hard hard but I lost 20 pounds bc if it.

I was in the hospital two days but I have multiple health issues so they were being very cautious however after it all occurred, I'm super glad I was in for two days bc they prevented blood clots for me and I could properly rest and not worry about walking and movement to prevent clots.xakso they gave me antibiotics for a day and IV pain meds and fluids so I wasn't forced to drink tons on my own right after surgery where nausea is common. The gas pain was severe and I walked three times to help it but if I had been home trying to get up and down for the potty etc man, tough.

I think it's better to stay overnight at least.. I have known some people to do so well they leave the same day but after experiencing it, I wouldn't suggest it

Overall though, it's not that bad... this is a great place for support... good fortune

I think liquid diet is typical. I know a few people who got to do a low fat/low carb but most of us had the liquid. It is really hard and it sucks and I cheated with can of tuna twice. My surgeon was pretty much like, just do your best and try not to cheat, so I think he was less concerned than some.

I asked if I could go home that day but was told no. After the surgery, I was glad of the overnight stay. It's a major surgery and it's nice to have nurses there to monitor you and keep your meds straight. If something is going to go wrong right afterwards I'd rather be there. They offered me to stay another night but I went home after 1.

That being said, I know this can be done as outpatient so I guess maybe just see how you're feeling afterwards? The anesthesia and pain meds had me pretty out of it.

I had a pretty easy recovery with limited pain but I would definitely recommend staying at least overnight. Not only can they give you pain meds if you need them (you'll need them), I was also on a drip so I was getting hydrated because of how little you're able to drink those first couple of days.

As for the pre op diet. It sux, but it definitely gets easier as the days go on.

I stayed in the hospital over night but would have been fine to go home the same day.....I'm sure if after your surgery you don't feel up to it they will let you stay.....If I were you I'd talk to the surgeon to make sure he knows that you want to stay over night "if you need to."......For example if I had been nauseous or in pain then I would have felt like I really needed to be there...

I did 14 day pre op diet. Don't cheat, they will know you did and a responsible surgeon will cancel your surgery. It's for your safety. Stay in the hospital as long as they will let you. Recovery is a b@tch. But soooo worth it.

In my case, we couldn't consume ANYTHING until we had a second leak test, which happened after our first night on the hospital. We were on IVs to avoid dehydration during that time, and I stayed on mine until that night. Once our leak test came back okay, we were given some fluids to start hydrating on our own.

Preop diet wasn't liquids only, it was 14 days of Protein shakes and salads and then 3 days of liquids only, and finally nothing at all after 10pm the night before surgery.

We followed it to the letter, no cheats at all because it was imprtabt tonis to get the best chance possible of a successful recovery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
