I am almost 3 weeks post op and in the middle of we 2 I'm experiencing the sensation of a bubble in my throat which causes me to vomit. I can't get much down and I've omitted dairy, thinking my lactose intolerance had gotten worse. Another thing, my sense of smell has heightened... I have the symptoms of a pregnant woman but I'm definitely not pregnant. My dietitian says these are common complaints. Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you taking a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) like omeprazole? That feeling could be related to acid reflux and I know my doc had me take a PPI for the first 6 weeks to help cut down on the burning/bubble feelings.

I know I got the mild lactose intolerance for about 6 months (mostly just upset my stomach and had mild diarrhea), and do recall things tasting too sweet and the sense of smell being stronger too.

It might also be a stricture, but I have no experience with that, and I would think your doctor would check for that at your appointments.

Yes. I already had heightened sense of smell. Now I can actually smell the metallic can of something i eat or drink. I can't stand evergreen bushes. And i swear i can smell the chemicals in everything.

The heightened sense of smell was what I experienced as well (and it was like being pregnant again, except thankfully, not!). Like to the point I felt like I had some new cool super hero ability. I'm now 4.5 months out, and that's subsided, but I still have it to some degree.

My "vomiting" experience was what I've seen on here described by others as "the foamies"....if I ate too fast, I'd get a very uncomfortable feeling, mouth would start watering like crazy, to the point I didn't want to swallow it and had to spit it out, then I'd just go for it and let the offending culprit out of my stomach and instantly felt better. That stopped for me around week 12. I guess I just learned by then how to go more slowly and listen very carefully to my pouch, and, as always, Respect The Tool! That's what I got it for.

Is it a reaction to moving to thicker textures before you are ready. I cottage cheese (4oz. pureed) for the first time yesterday and the same thing happened to me. I salivate like crazy and felt awful and and eventually coughed up a ball of slime. I'm going back to liquids for a few more days.

For me it happens for multiple reasons. At first I felt moving to the next food phase was causing this but now I think it happens because I may eat too fast. A half hour to get liquids down was fine but the same amount of time to get pureed items down would cause foamies/slimies. I'm learning to eat slower with every new food phase but sometimes it just happens. Good luck

Good point about the eating so slow the food gets cold. That was a major turn off from food for me when I first started eating more solid food, was it getting cold not even halfway through the meal. But I've learned to use that also as a tool, so if I'm getting through a portion of hot/warm food, I know it should be cool/cold around 3/4 through, that tells me I'm done.

I am only 1 day post op and it happens when I take my pain meds. So I also take my anti nausea/vomiting med and a gas x, and those seem to help tremendously

I get it if I eat too fast. It's very unpleasant but still not nice

Learning to listen to my body more

As for food going cold. I use a mini plate warmer with a tea light underneath. After 20 min of eating my food is still hot and sometimes its still cooking lol

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
