8 days out can I eat eggs and turkey sausage?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon barely gave me a diet plan to begin with. He said crackers were okay from day 2 so I didn't think eggs was a big deal. (Didn't eat any crackers though).

My surgeon has been out of town my entire week post op. I wanted to see him and ask him lots of questions but he isn't around.

Yes, I got sleeved in the U.S.

You were given no post op dietary instructions? :faint:

My suggestion? Seek more help! I was on liquids at day 8, personally. There was no way I could have tolerated eggs, much less sausage. No amount of chewing would have helped.

I'm thrilled you feel great, but you can't possibly know how your incision line of your newly cut tummy looks. You may be healing well on the outside, but that is not at all indicative of how healed your staple line is.

Call your surgeon and get an appointment with his/her NP or NUT ASAP. If he/she is unreachable, call around for a 2nd opinion. Following a proper post op diet is crucial to good health.

I was given the ok to try foods at one week out for soft (not the mushy diet) moist things however you need to see what your dr wants you to do. As for the question about not vomiting, I am 13 months out and have never vomited once.

@@amiskinnyyet that sucks that you weren't given a plan. You should check if there's anyone else at that practice like a PA, a nurse or a nutritionist that can help you out with guidelines.

My plan allowed me to try scrambled eggs at day 10 post op and "soft foods" at day 20.

I know this isn't your plan, and you NEED to follow up with your team, but this may give you a good guideline of what you should be doing right now:

I also have not experienced any vomiting yet. Is that normal?

I don't know why you are expecting to vomit. If you follow your program, eat slowly, take small bites, chew thoroughly, and eat small portions there is no reason that I am aware of that you should expect to vomit.

Yes, some people experience nausea early out, but from my understanding that can be a result of the anesthesia. I was given a nausea patch in the hospital to wear home.

As to eggs and turkey sausage: what phase are you on? If you are on soft foods you can try them. I would try one new food at a time though to see how you do. Some people have difficulty with eggs early out. I also had a bit of issue with grease and fat. If the sausage seems greasy you may want to blot any excess fat/grease with a paper towel.

The bottom line: go slow, follow your food plan, try one new food at a time, but focus on getting your Protein and fluids.

I first had eggs on Day 10, which was also my post-op appointment. My surgeon's PA told me to start incorporating Purees early, which includes scrambled eggs on my plan.

Sausage kicked my ass when I tried it! Definitely take it easy when you do and as suggested try one item at a time.

I'm glad you feel okay - I sure didn't at 8 days! I was on Clear liquids until day 10. I still haven't tried a sausage, 7 weeks out. Just now tried a cheeseburger, no bun (from a local restaurant, not fast food). I still eat a good deal of soft foods.

If your surgeon didn't give you a plan, there are plenty online. I've never seen one allow eggs/sausage at 8 days. Hope you find some assistance and guidance!

Hey everyone! I was sleeved exactly 8 days ago. I feel pretty amazing and really well healed. I've been listening to my body and obeying the rules. I was wondering if it's okay to eat some very well chewed eggs and turkey sausage today? I feel almost 100% other than fatigue from a lack of nutrients. Should I listen to my body and introduce and eat foods as I feel fit or just stick to another week of full liquids? Thanks!

It really depends on ur team. I was able to have mushy Proteins from day 3-14, now I'm coming up on my 15th day and at that time I can have textured Protein. eggs have been on my menu since day 3, boiled only. I quarter it because it's impossible to eat 1 in a sitting this early. Seems like my group focuses on the Protein intake as quick as possible.

"Listening to your body" right now is actually "Listening to your mind." It has nothing to do with your body, you just want eggs and sausage and the "old diet." Nobody here (at least I hope nobody here) is going to tell you, "Go for it!"

Seriously, if your surgeon hasn't cleared you for it, you don't eat it. Period. You may feel "all healed up" but you are NOT...and you won't be for another 4-5 weeks.

My surgeon required me to attend a 3 hour class before surgery to go over everything post-op. I'm shocked that you were not given instructions.

I would not do the sausage. You will regret it. It is probably even too early for eggs. You may feel healed but you are far from it! Many things could go wrong.

Furthermore the first solid food you try should not be sausage. Progress through the stages. If you have not done the puréed stage yet (and at 8 days post op, you shouldn't have) then you gotta got that stage first. You will not tolerate food as you did pre op. Things you love will make you miserable. Things you loved you may hate now. Take it slow. This is a marathon, not a race yada yada yada. If you weren't given a post op diet (shame on your surgeon and NUT) then there are many diet plans online for post sleeve. Take it easy or you could develop life threatening complications. All for what? Head hunger?

Sausage? Did your surgeon explain the risks of extending your stomach one week after major abdominal surgery?

If he/ she is out of town call his off to speak ever is covering from him. If he has no coverage he should be reported to the state medical board.

I can't have any ground meats until like week 8, and trust me.. I'm dying to throw some ground turkey into some of the stuff I'm making.

I could have eggs starting week 3, so technically 2 weeks after my surgery date. I tried to get them to push me up to purees after only a week b/c I was also feeling fine and tolerating everything. My NUT explained to me that it's not about what you're tolerating. They set up the diet so your stomach can heal inside. I grudgingly did the week of full liquids, lol. I have followed their instructions to a T and have not had any issues or vomiting. I know it sucks but if you can't get a hold of your surgeon I would stick to liquids until you can. As far as sausage, I wouldn't go anywhere near it for a while.

I'm also shocked you didn't get a post op plan.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
