My plan as well as any other plans ive looked into have these surguries as a plan exclusion. How have so many people gotten this approved? Where do you find the insurance? Are they all through employers? Feeling lost....

There are many employer plans that do include it, and Medicaid also seems to cover it.

I had a specific exclusion on my insurance so I paid for mine out of pocket. Saved up and cut back on frivolous things.

Advantage is that there is no 6 month + waiting period or dealing with approvals. My insurance did cover part of the surgery since I had a hernia repair.

But that waiting period is also a good thing, as it gives a person time to get their mind wrapped around the changes they'll be having to make to get the most out of surgery (so it's not a wasted time period).

If you don't have enough to have it done in the U.S. (assuming that is where you live), then you should look into surgery in Mexico. It is significantly cheaper - I think under $6,000 or even lower - and you can do research on this forum. There should be a whole section dedicated to Mexico surgery options and recommendations, and the site has coordinators that can work with you to figure out the details.

I was approved because I did all of the requirements that the insurance wanted. I know its really hard to get approved and that's why I covered my butt a lot with going to extra dietitian appointments and doing whatever I can to assure that I would get approved. I did have to go through a lot of hurdles though. I was approved 3 days after it was sent to insurance with a surgery date of Nov. 21st.

Be sure your plan doesn't have a provision that states "Only when medically necessary". My plan shows weight loss surgery on the list of excluded services, but it has an exception for medical necessity. If your BMI is 40 or above, you should have no trouble claiming medical necessity. BMI of 35-40 also qualifies if you have a comorbidity like sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and a few others. It's worth looking into, just to be sure. Good luck to you!!

I have blue shield and they cover most of it but you do have to have six months of nutrition counseling and stuff prior which they pay for. I have a ppo so I don't know if that makes a difference or not and I bought it through a broker.

I don't recall if there were particular requirements such as having a comorbidities etc

maybe you need to talk to a social worker or insurance brokers perhaps for better guidance because even state medicaid pays for WLS these days!!

There are also medical loans you can take out to finance the surgery if you can't get it through insurance.

Our insurance covers it. They have requirement, including 6months of pre op classes and monthly medical checks. You can only go thru one clinic. There is a nutritionist, a physical therapist and a psychologist on staff. You can choose your surgeon.

Our insurance requires a psychological screening, and from some of the post I see here I think that all bariatric surgery candidates should be screened for mental health issues and eating disorders.

Post bariatric cosmetic surgery is excluded but more and more they are approving it in cases where there is skin breakdown or infection.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
